Jaguar Transmissions

Finding the right Jaguar transmission

Jaguar’s automatics have come from ZF for most of the past thirty years — the 4HP and 5HP24 four- and five-speeds, the 6HP26 and 6HP28 six-speeds from around 2003 and the 8HP eight-speeds since around 2013 — with a Mercedes five-speed behind the supercharged XJR and XKR, a Ford five-speed in the early S Type and a Jatco automatic in the X Type.

The engine decides the unit as much as the year: the supercharged and non-supercharged versions of the same car often carry different transmissions. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Jaguar vehicles

ZF 4HP22, 4HP24 and 5HP24

The four-speeds in the XJ6 (1995–1997), and the 5HP24 five-speed behind the 4.0L V8 in the XK8 (1997–2002) and XJ8 (1998 to around 2003).

Mercedes W5A580

The Mercedes five-speed behind the supercharged 4.0L V8 in the XJR and XKR (1998–2003).

Ford 5R55N (S Type)

The Ford 5R55-series five-speed, usually listed as the 5R55N, with Jaguar’s J-gate selector in the 1999–2002 S Type.

ZF 6HP26 and 6HP28

The 6HP26 in the XK8 and XKR (from around 2003 to 2005), S Type (2003–2008), XJ8 (2003–2009), XK Series 4.2 (2007–2009) and XF (2008–2012); the stronger 6HP28 behind the supercharged 5.0L in the XF (2009–2012) and the 5.0L in the XK Series (2010–2014) and XJ Series (2010–2012). Both were filled for life at the factory, and shift, valve-body and solenoid problems from around 50,000 miles are widely reported.

ZF 8HP70, 8HP45 and 9HP48

The 8HP70 behind the V6 and V8 and the 8HP45 behind the fours: XF from around 2013, XJ Series from 2013, F Type from 2014, and XE and F Pace from 2017. The E Pace uses the transverse ZF 9HP48 nine-speed.

X Type and the manuals

The Jatco JF506E five-speed automatic and the Ford MTX-75 manual in the X Type (2002–2008), and the ZF six-speed manual offered in the F Type V6 from around 2016 to 2019.

FAQ

Used Jaguar transmission questions, answered

How do I know which transmission my Jaguar has?

It follows from the model, engine and year, and on cars from 2000 on the engine is the eighth character of the VIN. On an XF, for example, a C or E there is the supercharged 5.0L, which takes the 6HP28 rather than the 6HP26. Send us the full VIN and we will identify the unit.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?

A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Which Jaguars have the ZF six-speed problems?

The 6HP26 and 6HP28 — in the S Type, XJ8, XK and XF from around 2003 to 2014 — were filled for life at the factory, and shift, valve-body and solenoid faults from around 50,000 miles are widely reported. Not every fault means a failed unit: the 2003 S Type’s unexpected selection of reverse, for example, was fixed by reprogramming under recall 04V024000. Tell us the symptoms and the VIN and we will advise.

Does a used Jaguar transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
