Engine Options

Which engine does your Sonata have?

Seven generations of Sonata have been sold in the US, and the engine families changed almost every time: Mitsubishi-designed 2.4L and 2.0L fours and a 3.0L V6 in the 1989–1998 cars, the Sirius II 2.4L and Delta V6s of the 1999–2005 EF, the Theta four and Lambda V6 of the 2006–2010 NF, the direct-injected Theta II fours — 2.4L and 2.0L turbo — of the 2011–2014 YF and 2015–2019 LF, with a 1.6L Gamma turbo in the Eco, and the 2.5L Smartstream, its turbocharged N Line version and the 2020–2023 1.6L turbo of the DN8. The hybrids have had three different engines of their own.

The table below lists what was offered when. The Hyundai family code (G4KJ, G4KN and so on) is on the engine and the build sheet, and the eighth character of the VIN identifies the engine, so we confirm from the VIN before we quote.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which 2.4L

Not counting the hybrid’s, the Sonata has had five different 2.4L fours: the SOHC G4CS of 1989–1991, the Sirius II of 1999–2005, the Theta of 2006–2008, the Theta II MPI of 2009–2010 and the Theta II GDI from 2011. They are not interchangeable, so match the family code, not the size.

Which 2.0L

The 1992–1998 cars have the Mitsubishi-designed G4CP DOHC 2.0L, which has nothing in common with the later engines of the same size. The 2.0L turbo made 274 hp in the 2011–2014 YF and was detuned to 245 hp for the 2015 LF, and the 2.0L in the 2016-on hybrids is a different, non-turbo Nu or Smartstream engine. Match the generation and the code.

Hybrids have their own engines

The 2011–2015 Sonata Hybrid uses a 2.4L Theta II MPI in Atkinson cycle, the 2016–2019 a 2.0L Nu GDI and the 2020-on a 2.0L Smartstream, none of them the standard engines. Tell us if your car is a hybrid or plug-in.

Smartstream 2.5L and 2.5L turbo

The G4KN and the N Line’s turbocharged G4KP are different engines and do not interchange. Match the code and the trim.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and whether the car is a hybrid before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Sonata engine problems

Rod-bearing failure — 2.4L GDI and 2.0L turbo, 2011–2019

Machining debris left in the crankshaft oil passages starves the connecting-rod bearings, which knock and then seize. Hyundai recalled the 2011–2014 cars to inspect the engine and replace it where needed, and added Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software that listens for bearing wear and limits power. Every 2011–2019 Sonata with the 2.4L GDI or 2.0L turbo now has a lifetime short-block warranty that passes to later owners, provided the KSDS update is installed, so ask a Hyundai dealer to check the VIN before you buy an engine.

Fuel-pipe leak after an engine replacement — 2011–2014

When the 2.4L GDI or 2.0L turbo in a 2011–2014 Sonata was replaced, the high-pressure fuel pipe at the fuel-pump outlet could be damaged, misaligned or under-torqued during the swap and leak fuel. Hyundai recalled these cars for a dealer to inspect the pipe and replace it if it leaks, and the same check is worth making after any engine swap.

FAQ

Sonata engine questions, answered

Which engine does my Sonata have?

The eighth character of the VIN identifies it, and the family code is on the engine: G4CS for the 1989–1991 2.4L, G4CP for the 1992–1998 2.0L, G6AT for the 3.0L V6, G4JS for the 1999–2005 2.4L, G4KC, G4KE and G4KJ for the three later 2.4Ls, G4KH for the 2.0L turbo and G4KN for the 2020-on 2.5L. Send us the VIN and we will confirm.

My 2011–2019 Sonata knocks. Do I need a used engine?

Check with a Hyundai dealer first. The 2011–2014 cars were recalled for rod-bearing failure, and 2011–2019 Sonatas with the 2.4L GDI or 2.0L turbo have a lifetime short-block warranty if the KSDS update is installed — a dealer can see from the VIN whether yours qualifies. We supply engines for cars that fall outside that cover.

Will a Kia Optima engine fit my Sonata?

The 1999–2005 Sonata’s 2.4L and Delta V6s were also used in the 2001–2006 Kia Optima, and the 2011–2019 Sonata’s 2.4L GDI and 2.0L turbo are Theta II engines shared with the Optima of those years, but the exact code and model year still have to match. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.

Ready to replace your Sonata engine?

Tell us the year and have your VIN to hand — a specialist will confirm the right unit and send you a quote.
