Which transmission does your Sonata have?
The Sonata’s transmissions have followed its engines: Mitsubishi-derived four-speed automatics from 1989 to 2008 and five-speed manuals to 2010, Hyundai’s own five-speed automatic behind the 2006–2010 V6 and the 2009–2010 four, its six-speed from 2011, an eight-speed behind the 2.0L turbo from 2018 and every non-hybrid other than the N Line from 2020, a seven-speed dry dual-clutch in the 1.6T Eco, an eight-speed wet dual-clutch in the N Line, and a six-speed hybrid unit in every Sonata Hybrid.
The table below shows what was fitted when. Because one year can have two or three different units, we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Match the engine
Each engine has a transmission matched to it: the 2.4L kept the six-speed automatic to 2019 while the 2.0T moved to an eight-speed for 2018, the 1.6T Eco has a dual-clutch and the hybrid a six-speed with the motor built in. Tell us the engine as well as the year.
2.0L turbo: six- or eight-speed
The 2.0T had the six-speed automatic from 2015 to 2017 and the A8LF1 eight-speed for 2018–2019, the only Sonata engine to get the eight-speed before 2020. The model year decides which one fits.
Dual-clutch or automatic
The Eco’s D7GF1 is a dry dual-clutch and the N Line’s D8LF1 a wet one; neither is a conventional automatic and neither interchanges with the eight-speed behind the 2.5L. Tell us the engine and trim.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Sonata transmission problems
Stuck in third gear — four-speed automatic, 1999–2005
A failing input or output speed sensor makes the control module set a fault code and hold the transmission in third gear as a fail-safe, often with the check-engine light on and a harsh engagement into Drive or Reverse. New sensors cure many of these cars, so have the codes read before replacing the transmission.
Selector out of step with the gear — 2011–2014
The shift cable can come off the pin on the transmission’s shift lever, so the gear the transmission is in may not match the one shown on the selector, and a car left in what reads as Park can roll away. Hyundai recalled 2011–2014 Sonatas for dealers to inspect and repair the connection. It is a linkage fault, so check the cable before condemning the transmission.
Loss of drive — N Line eight-speed wet dual-clutch, 2021–2022
If the transmission oil pump malfunctions, the fail-safe limited-drive mode may not work as intended and the car can lose drive completely. Hyundai recalled 2021–2022 Sonata N Lines in October 2022: dealers update the transmission control software and inspect the transmission, replacing it where necessary.

FAQ
Sonata transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Sonata have?
It depends on the engine and year: four-speed automatics and five-speed manuals from 1989, a five-speed automatic in the 2006–2010 V6 and 2009–2010 four, the six-speed automatic from 2011, an eight-speed automatic behind the 2.0T from 2018 and every other non-hybrid except the N Line from 2020, dual-clutches in the Eco and N Line, and a hybrid six-speed in every Sonata Hybrid. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Is the Sonata Hybrid’s transmission the same as the standard six-speed?
No. The hybrid’s six-speed has the electric motor where the torque converter would be and is matched to the hybrid engine. It does not interchange with the six-speed automatic in the non-hybrid cars.
Hyundai recalled my N Line for the dual-clutch. Do I still need a replacement?
Have the recall done first. Under it the dealer updates the transmission control software and inspects the transmission, replacing it where necessary at no charge. We supply units for cars the recall does not cover.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
