Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Elantra have?
The Elantra has used a wide spread of transmissions: four-speed automatics and five-speed manuals from 1992 to 2010, and on the Elantra Touring to 2012; six-speed automatics and manuals from 2011; a seven-speed dry dual-clutch behind the turbo Eco and Sport from 2017; the IVT continuously variable transmission on the 2.0L from 2020; a dry six-speed dual-clutch in the Hybrid; and an eight-speed wet dual-clutch in the Elantra N.
The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the transmission follows the engine and the same year can have three or four different units, we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Match the engine
The transmission follows the engine. The 1.4L turbo Eco was sold only with the seven-speed dual-clutch, the non-turbo 2.0L never had a dual-clutch, and the 2.0L turbo Elantra N uses its own eight-speed.
Dry or wet dual-clutch
The seven-speed in the Eco, Sport and N Line is a dry dual-clutch, the Elantra N’s eight-speed is a wet one, and the Hybrid’s six-speed is a dry unit of its own. None of the three interchange.
Automatic or IVT on a 2020
The 2.0L sedan switched from the six-speed automatic to the IVT for 2020, so a 2019 and a 2020 Elantra sedan with the same engine take different units.
Setup after fitting
The dual-clutch units and the IVT are electronically controlled. After a replacement is fitted, its learned values need resetting with a scan tool, and a dual-clutch needs its clutch touch points relearned.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Elantra transmission problems
Dual-clutch hesitation — 1.4L Eco and 1.6L Sport, 2017–2020
The seven-speed dry dual-clutch can hesitate or judder when pulling away from a stop and in slow traffic. Hyundai has released control-module software updates for this behavior, so have the software checked before condemning the transmission.
Wet dual-clutch oil pump — Elantra N, 2022
A fault in the eight-speed’s electric oil pump can cause a loss of drive power. Hyundai recalled the 2022 Elantra N for it: the remedy is a control-module software update, with the transmission replaced where a fault code has already been stored.

FAQ
Elantra transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Elantra have?
It depends on the engine and year: a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual from 1992 to 2010 and on the 2011–2012 Elantra Touring; six-speed automatics and manuals from 2011, until the IVT replaced the 2.0L sedan’s automatic for 2020; a dry dual-clutch behind the turbo Eco, Sport and N Line; a six-speed dry dual-clutch in the Hybrid; and a wet eight-speed or six-speed manual in the Elantra N. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
My 2022 Elantra N lost drive. Is that the recall?
A loss of drive power is the symptom Hyundai recalled the 2022 Elantra N for, caused by the eight-speed wet dual-clutch’s oil pump. Have a dealer check the VIN: a software update is the fix, plus a replacement transmission if a fault code has already been set.
Is the IVT a CVT?
Yes. The IVT is Hyundai’s chain-type continuously variable transmission, fitted to the 2.0L sedan from 2020. It replaced the six-speed automatic, and the two are not interchangeable.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
