Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Santa Fe have?
The Santa Fe has had Mitsubishi-derived four-speed and Hyundai five-speed automatics to 2009, Hyundai’s own six-speed automatics from 2010 to 2019, the A8LF1 eight-speed from 2019, the D8LF1 eight-speed wet dual-clutch behind the 2.5L turbo from 2021 to 2025, a hybrid six-speed in the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid, and — for 2026 — a return to a conventional eight-speed automatic on the turbo. Manuals were only offered on the base four-cylinder and the 2.7L Mu, and none after 2010.
The table below shows what was fitted when, with the Santa Fe Sport and XL included. Because the unit follows the engine, we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Match the engine
In every generation the unit followed the engine: four-speed behind the 2.4L and 2.7L, five-speed behind the 3.3L and 3.5L, different six-speeds behind the Sport’s 2.4L and 2.0T, and since 2021 an automatic for the 2.5L, a dual-clutch for the 2.5L turbo and a hybrid six-speed for the 1.6T. A unit from behind another engine will not fit.
Two 2019 Santa Fes
The three-row Santa Fe XL, with the six-speed automatic, was sold alongside the new two-row Santa Fe, with the eight-speed, for 2019. The VIN tells us which you have.
Dual-clutch, automatic, or 2026
The 2021–2025 2.5L turbo uses the D8LF1 wet dual-clutch; for 2026 Hyundai switched the same engine to a conventional eight-speed automatic. They do not interchange, so the model year matters.
Software and recalls first
The D8LF1 is controlled by software that a 2022 recall reprograms, and the recall replaces the transmission where the fault has already set a warning light. Have any open recall done before buying a used unit.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Santa Fe transmission problems
Loss of drive — 2.5L turbo eight-speed wet dual-clutch, 2021–2022
A fault in the high-pressure electric transmission oil pump, combined with fail-safe logic that did not handle it, can cause a complete loss of drive. Recall 22V746 (October 2022) covers Santa Fe 2.5Ts built from late November 2020 to early May 2022: dealers update the control-unit software and replace the transmission if the warning light is on.
Harsh shifts — six-speed automatic, 2010–2012
Harsh or abrupt shifts on the first six-speed cars are owner reports rather than a recall. Some 2010 front-wheel-drive 2.4L automatics were the subject of a recall whose details we could not confirm; a dealer can check the VIN for anything still open.
Cold stutter — four-speed automatic, 2001–2004
Owners report a stutter or shudder from the four-speed when it is cold. No recall was issued, and the reports are owner accounts rather than a documented defect.

FAQ
Santa Fe transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Santa Fe have?
It depends on the engine and year: four- and five-speed automatics to 2009, Hyundai six-speeds from 2010 to 2019 (including every Santa Fe Sport and XL), the A8LF1 eight-speed from 2019, the D8LF1 dual-clutch behind the 2.5L turbo from 2021 to 2025, and a hybrid six-speed in the Hybrid. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Hyundai recalled my 2021–2022 Santa Fe 2.5T for the dual-clutch. Do I need a new transmission?
Have the recall done first. Under 22V746 the dealer updates the control software and replaces the transmission where the fault has already set a warning light. We supply units for vehicles the recall does not cover.
Does the Santa Fe Hybrid use the same transmission as the 2.5L?
No. The Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid use the A6MF2H six-speed with the electric motor built in, the 2.5L uses the eight-speed automatic and the 2.5L turbo a wet dual-clutch. None of the three interchange.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
