Engine Options

Which engine does your Genesis have?

The Hyundai-badged Genesis covers two cars: the rear-drive sedan of 2009–2016, with the 3.8L Lambda V6 and the 4.6L and 5.0L Tau V8s, and the 2010–2016 Genesis Coupe, with a 2.0L Theta II turbo and its own 3.8L V6. Hyundai made Genesis a separate brand in late 2015, so the 2017-on G80 and its successors are Genesis-brand cars and are not covered here.

The table below shows what was offered when. The 3.8L moved from port injection to direct injection in 2012 on the sedan and 2013 on the Coupe, so we confirm from your VIN.

2009–2014BH sedan (facelift 2012)
3.8L Lambda RS MPI V6Code: G6DA/G6DK2009–2011.
4.6L Tau MPI V8Code: G8BA2009–2012; output revised mid-2010.
3.8L Lambda II RS GDI V6Code: G6DJ2012–2014.
5.0L Tau GDI V8Code: G8BEStandard 5.0 and R-Spec in 2012; R-Spec only 2013–2014.
2015–2016DH sedan
3.8L Lambda II GDI V6Rear-wheel drive or HTRAC all-wheel drive.
5.0L Tau GDI V8Rear-wheel drive only.
2010–2016Genesis Coupe
2.0L Theta II turbo four-cylinderCode: G4KF2010–2012; twin-scroll turbo version 2013–2014; dropped from North America for 2015.
3.8L Lambda RS MPI V62010–2012.
3.8L Lambda II RS GDI V62013–2016; the only engine for 2015–2016.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Sedan or Coupe

The sedan and the Coupe share the 3.8L name, but each has its own version, and the Coupe’s 2.0L turbo was never in the sedan. Tell us which car you have.

MPI or GDI 3.8L

The port-injected 3.8L (2009–2011 sedan, 2010–2012 Coupe) and the direct-injected Lambda II (2012-on sedan, 2013-on Coupe) are different engines with different fuel systems. Match the year.

Two 2.0L turbos

The Coupe’s 2.0L turbo was revised with a twin-scroll turbocharger for 2013–2014. A 2010–2012 engine is not the same as a 2013–2014 one.

Not the G80

From the 2017 model year the sedan became the Genesis G80 under the separate Genesis brand. This page covers the Hyundai-badged 2009–2016 sedan and 2010–2016 Coupe only.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Genesis engine problems

No engine recall found — all engines, 2009–2016

No engine-specific NHTSA recall was found for the 3.8L Lambda, the 4.6L and 5.0L Tau or the Coupe’s 2.0L turbo in these years.

Tau V8 valvetrain reports — 4.6L, 2009–2012

Owners report hydraulic-lifter tick, cam-phaser oil-control valve faults, timing-chain tensioner wear and the occasional broken valve spring at high mileage, and Hyundai issued a 2014 bulletin on the timing chain and sprockets. These are owner and bulletin-level reports only; none has led to a recall.

ABS fire recall is not the engine — Genesis Coupe, 2011–2015

Recall 23V651 (September 2023) covers 2011–2015 Genesis Coupes for an ABS module that can leak and short, with a fire risk even when parked. It has nothing to do with the engine, but the car should be parked outside until the recall is done.

FAQ

Genesis engine questions, answered

Which engine does my Genesis have?

Sedans: the 3.8L V6 or 4.6L V8 for 2009–2011, the 3.8L GDI, 4.6L (2012 only) or 5.0L for 2012–2014, and the 3.8L or 5.0L for 2015–2016. Coupes: the 2.0L turbo for 2010–2014 or the 3.8L V6. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Is my 2017 Genesis G80 covered here?

No. Hyundai made Genesis its own brand in late 2015, and from the 2017 model year the sedan was sold as the Genesis G80. This page covers the Hyundai-badged 2009–2016 sedan and the 2010–2016 Genesis Coupe only.

Will a Genesis Coupe 3.8L fit the sedan?

The sedan and Coupe 3.8Ls are from the same Lambda family but are different versions, and both changed again when direct injection arrived in 2012–2013. Send us your VIN and we will match the right one.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
