Dodge Transmissions
Finding the right Dodge transmission
Dodge and Ram have used Chrysler’s own automatics, a Mercedes five-speed and ZF-designed eight-speeds, each family spread across several models. That makes a good used unit easier to find.
The unit still has to match the engine, the drivetrain and the model year, and the eight-speeds alone come in five sizes. Give us your VIN and we’ll match it.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Dodge vehicles
RFE automatics — 45RFE, 545RFE, 65RFE, 66RFE and 68RFE
Chrysler’s rear-drive automatics: the 545RFE and 65RFE behind the Ram 1500’s V8s to 2013 and in the Dakota and Durango, the 66RFE behind gasoline heavy-duty Rams, and the 68RFE behind the Cummins.
TorqueFlite eight-speeds — 845RE, 850RE, 8HP70, 8HP75 and 8HP95
ZF-designed units built by Chrysler from 2013: in the Ram 1500, Charger, Challenger and Durango, sized from the V6 up to the Hellcat.
NAG1 (W5A580)
The Mercedes-designed five-speed in the Charger, Challenger, Magnum, 300, Nitro and Durango before the eight-speeds arrived.
42RLE
The four-speed behind V6 Rams, Dakotas, Durangos and Nitros from 2003 to 2012.
Front-wheel-drive automatics — 41TE, 62TE and the nine-speed
The four-speed and six-speed in the Caravan, Journey, Avenger and 200, and the nine-speed in the Pacifica and Hornet.
Manuals and heavy-duty units
The NV3500 and Getrag six-speed in the Ram 1500 to 2008, the NV4500, NV5600 and G56 behind the Cummins, the Tremec six-speed in the Challenger, and the Aisin automatics in high-output heavy-duty Rams.

FAQ
Used Dodge transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Dodge or Ram has?
It depends on the model, engine and model year, and most years had more than one unit. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.
Are the eight-speeds interchangeable?
No. The 845RE, 850RE, 8HP70, 8HP75 and 8HP95 are built for different engines and torque levels. Match the unit to the engine, not just the number of gears.
Does a replacement need programming?
On the eight-speeds and the RFE units, yes. They are controlled by software that has to be matched to the vehicle, and many shift complaints are fixed by an update alone.
Does a used Dodge or Ram transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
