Which transmission does your Ram 1500 have?

The 1994–2001 Ram 1500 used Chrysler’s RH and RE four-speed automatics, and the RE carried on behind the 5.9L V8 into 2003. The 2002 redesign brought the electronically controlled RFE automatics, joined from 2003 by the 42RLE four-speed behind the V6. Eight-speed automatics arrived for 2013, and every redesigned 2019-on truck has one. Manuals were offered until 2008.

From 2019 to 2024 the older design was sold alongside the new one as the Ram 1500 Classic, so the model year alone does not settle which transmission a truck has. We confirm the exact unit from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

RH or RE — 1994–2001

An RH unit has a hydraulic governor; an RE unit’s governor pressure is controlled electronically, through wiring to the truck’s computer. The two are not direct swaps, so give us the exact model year.

Classic or new truck

From 2019 to 2024 Ram sold the Classic and the redesigned truck side by side. The redesigned truck uses the 850RE, the 8HP75 and, in the TRX, the 8HP95, so match the unit to the truck you have. The VIN tells us which it is.

Match the engine

Each eight-speed is sized for engine torque: the 8HP45, 845RE and 850RE go behind the V6, the 8HP70 and 8HP75 behind the Hemi, EcoDiesel and Hurricane, and the 8HP95 behind the TRX’s supercharged V8. A unit from a different engine will not do.

Two- or four-wheel drive

Four-wheel-drive units differ from two-wheel-drive ones. Tell us which your truck has.

Programming after fitting

The eight-speeds run on control software, so a replacement unit has to be programmed to the truck once it is in. A software update is also the first thing to try on a shift complaint, before replacing anything.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Ram 1500 transmission problems

Governor pressure faults — 42RE and 46RE

The RE units time their upshifts from a governor pressure solenoid and sensor. When either fails, shifts come late, harsh or erratically, or the truck will not upshift at all. The parts sit under the oil pan, so replacing the failed one often cures it without removing the transmission.

Heat and overdrive wear — 46RH and 46RE

Towing and heavy loads overheat the fluid in these four-speeds, and the overdrive unit at the back of the transmission takes the worst of it. A worn unit slips in fourth or loses overdrive altogether.

Solenoid pack failure — 45RFE, 545RFE and 65RFE

When the solenoid and pressure-switch assembly fails, the transmission sets a fault code and drops into limp mode, holding a single gear. The assembly can be replaced on its own, so diagnose it before condemning the transmission.

Harsh low-speed shifts — 2013–2018 eight-speeds

Clunky downshifts as the truck slows to a stop and rough low-gear shifts are the familiar complaint on these trucks. Ram addressed them with transmission-control software updates.

FAQ

Ram 1500 transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Ram 1500 have?

It depends on the model year and engine: RH and RE four-speeds on 1994–2003 trucks, RFE automatics from 2002, the 42RLE behind the 2003–2012 V6, and eight-speeds from 2013. Manuals were offered until 2008. Send us your VIN and we will confirm the exact unit.

Will a transmission from a Durango or Grand Cherokee fit?

Several of these units are shared, but each vehicle has its own version. The unit has to match your engine, drivetrain and model year, so send us your VIN.

Can I get a manual for my Ram 1500?

Only for 1994–2008 trucks: the NV3500 five-speed up to 2004, the Getrag 238 six-speed for 2005–2008, and the Tremec T56 six-speed in the 2004–2006 SRT-10 regular cab. No Ram 1500 has offered a manual since 2008.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
