Engine Options
Which engine does your Ram 1500 have?
The Ram 1500 was a Dodge until 2010 and a Ram from 2011, and the same truck was sold twice over: the 2009–2018 design carried on as the “Ram 1500 Classic” until 2024, alongside the new truck launched for 2019. That makes the model year alone a poor guide to the engine.
The engines changed with each generation. The 1994–2001 trucks ran Chrysler’s pushrod Magnum V6 and V8s; the 2002 redesign brought the overhead-cam PowerTech engines and, from 2003, the 5.7L Hemi. The Hemi was revised in 2009 and gained the eTorque mild-hybrid system on some 2019-on trucks, and the Hurricane six replaced it for 2025 before the Hemi returned for 2026. The table below lists what was offered when; the VIN confirms it.

|---|---|
| 3.9L (239 cu in) Magnum V6 | All years. |
| 5.2L (318 cu in) Magnum V8 | All years. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
The 2002 redesign
The Ram 1500 was redesigned for 2002, a year ahead of the 2500 and 3500. A 1994–2001 truck takes one of the pushrod Magnum engines; from 2002 the V6 and the smaller V8 are the overhead-cam 3.7L and 4.7L, a different design. Tell us the exact model year.
Classic or new truck
From 2019 to 2024 Ram sold two different 1500s at once. The Classic uses the 2009–2018 engines; the new truck has its own versions, including the eTorque mild hybrids. The VIN tells us which you have.
Which Hemi
The 2003–2008 Hemi and the 2009-on “Eagle” Hemi are not interchangeable as units, and the eTorque version carries its own hardware. Match the model year.
Which 4.7L
The 4.7L was revised for 2008 with different heads and ignition. Pre-2008 and 2008-on engines should not be swapped blindly.
Which diesel
The 2014–2018 EcoDiesel and the 2020–2023 EcoDiesel are different generations of the engine.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Ram 1500 engine problems
Intake plenum gasket — 1994–2003 Magnum engines
The bottom of the Magnum intake is sealed by a bolted-on steel pan, and the gasket beneath it hardens and leaks with age. The engine then sucks oil up into the intake: expect blue smoke, oil-fouled plugs and steady oil use that can pass for worn rings. Rule out the plenum before replacing the engine.
Overheating damage — 4.7L
The 4.7L has little tolerance for overheating: one overheat commonly causes head-gasket failure, cracked heads or dropped valve seats, which means a head rebuild or a replacement engine.
Hemi tick — 2009-on 5.7L
Failed roller lifters wipe the camshaft lobes, causing ticking, misfires and metal in the oil, often ending in a replacement engine. A leaking exhaust manifold, usually from broken manifold bolts, makes a similar tick and is a far simpler repair, so have it diagnosed first.
Cracked EGR cooler — 2014–2018 EcoDiesel
A cracked EGR cooler lets coolant into the intake and can cause a fire. These trucks were recalled to replace the cooler; check by VIN that the work was done.

FAQ
Ram 1500 engine questions, answered
Will a Hemi from a Charger or Durango fit my Ram?
The 5.7L Hemi was shared across Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Jeep, but each vehicle has its own version and the engine was revised in 2009. Match the model year and send us your VIN so we can confirm.
Is my 2019–2024 truck a Classic?
If it has the 2009–2018 body rather than the redesigned one introduced for 2019, it is a Classic. The VIN settles it, so send it to us.
Did the Ram 1500 come with a diesel?
Yes — the 3.0L EcoDiesel from 2014 to 2018 and, in a newer form, from 2020 to 2023. The Cummins diesel was never offered in the 1500; it was a 2500 and 3500 engine.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
