Which engine does your Caravan and Grand Caravan have?
The Caravan arrived for 1984 with a choice of two carbureted four-cylinders, Chrysler’s 2.2L and Mitsubishi’s 2.6L. During 1987 they gave way to a fuel-injected 2.5L and Mitsubishi’s 3.0L V6, the long-wheelbase Grand Caravan joined the range, and a 2.5L Turbo followed for 1989–1990. Chrysler’s own 3.3L V6 arrived for 1990 and the 3.8L for 1994, and those two pushrod V6s stayed until 2010. The short Caravan’s four-cylinder became the 2.4L for 1996, and the Mitsubishi V6 ran to 2000.
The short Caravan ended after 2007. The 2008–2020 Grand Caravan kept the 3.3L and 3.8L for three more years alongside a new 4.0L V6, then from 2011 used the 3.6L Pentastar alone. The table below lists what was offered when; because the 3.3L and 3.8L span several generations with different ratings, we confirm the exact engine from the VIN.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Caravan or Grand Caravan
From 1987 to 2007 the short Caravan and the long Grand Caravan were sold side by side, and their engine choices were not the same. From 2008 there was only the Grand Caravan. Tell us which van and the year.
Mitsubishi 3.0L or Chrysler V6, 1990–2000
In these years a V6 van could have Mitsubishi’s 3.0L, an overhead-cam engine with a timing belt, or Chrysler’s pushrod 3.3L or, from 1994, 3.8L. They are entirely different engines, so tell us which V6 your van has, or send the VIN.
Which 3.3L or 3.8L
The 3.3L ran from 1990 to 2010 and the 3.8L from 1994 to 2010, across several generations, and their ratings changed along the way. Match the model year, not just the size.
Flex-fuel and natural-gas 3.3L
Some 3.3L vans were built to run on E85, and some from 1994 on compressed natural gas. Tell us if yours is one of them so the engine quoted matches.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Caravan and Grand Caravan engine problems
Oil burning — 3.0L Mitsubishi V6, 1987–2000
Worn valve guides and valve-stem seals make the 3.0L burn oil, seen as blue smoke at start-up and after idling and a falling oil level between changes. Left unchecked, it fouls the spark plugs and can damage the catalytic converter.
Cylinder head wear — 2011–2013 3.6L
Valve seat wear in the left cylinder head causes a ticking noise and misfires on that bank. Chrysler extended the warranty on that head for affected vans, but the extension has since expired. When buying a used 2011–2013 engine, ask whether the left head has been replaced.
Oil-filter housing leaks — 3.6L, 2011 on
The Pentastar’s plastic oil-filter housing, which also carries the oil cooler, can crack and leak oil or coolant down the back of the engine. The housing is a separate part, so have it checked before concluding the engine itself has failed.

FAQ
Caravan and Grand Caravan engine questions, answered
Which engine does my van have?
A 1984–1990 van has a 2.2L, 2.6L or 2.5L four-cylinder (turbocharged on some 1989–1990 vans), the Mitsubishi 3.0L V6 from 1987, or the 3.3L in 1990. From 1991 the choice was a four-cylinder in the short Caravan (the 2.5L to 1995, the 2.4L from 1996 to 2007) or a V6: the 3.0L to 2000, the 3.3L to 2010, the 3.8L from 1994 to 2010, or the 4.0L on some 2008–2010 Grand Caravans. Every 2011–2020 van has the 3.6L Pentastar. The VIN confirms it.
Will a 3.6L from a Journey or Charger fit my Grand Caravan?
The Charger’s 3.6L sits lengthwise for rear-wheel drive, so it is set up differently from the van’s, which sits crosswise like the Journey’s. The van also kept the original Pentastar rather than the 2016 upgrade some other vehicles got. Match by model year and send us your VIN so we can confirm.
My 2015–2016 Grand Caravan lost drive. Is it the engine?
Check the transmission first. Some 2015–2016 Grand Caravans were recalled for a transmission pump that can seize and take away drive. Have a dealer check the recall by VIN before assuming the engine has failed.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
