Engine Options
Which engine does your Durango have?
Three generations of Durango have used three engine families: the Magnum V6 and V8s and the 4.7L PowerTech in the 1998–2003 truck built on the Dakota, the 3.7L and 4.7L PowerTech and the 5.7L Hemi in the 2004–2009 truck, and the 3.6L Pentastar, the 5.7L and 6.4L Hemi and the supercharged Hellcat in the Durango sold since 2011.
There was no 2010 Durango. The table below lists what was offered when; because the 4.7L, the Hemi and the Pentastar were each revised partway through, we confirm the exact engine from your VIN.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.9L Magnum V6 | 1999 only, few built. | |
| 5.2L Magnum V8 | 1998–2000, two-wheel drive; replaced by the 4.7L. | |
| 5.9L Magnum V8 | All years, including the R/T; a supercharged Shelby S.P.360 version was built in small numbers in 1999–2000. | |
| 4.7L PowerTech V8 | From 2000; standard on four-wheel-drive trucks. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.7L PowerTech V6 | Code: EKG | Base engine from 2004; offered to 2007 and possibly later. |
| 4.7L PowerTech V8 | 2004–2007; revised engine for 2008–2009. | |
| 5.7L Hemi V8 | All years; cylinder deactivation from 2006, revised engine for 2009. | |
| 5.7L Hemi Two-Mode Hybrid | 2009 only, four-wheel drive; around 800 built before it was cancelled. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6L Pentastar V6 | Standard engine; revised for 2016. | |
| 5.7L Hemi V8 | R/T, 2011–2025, with cylinder deactivation. | |
| 6.4L Hemi V8 | SRT 392, 2018–2024; returns in the R/T 392 for 2026. | |
| 6.2L supercharged Hemi V8 | SRT Hellcat, 2021 and again from 2023. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Which 4.7L
The 4.7L was revised for 2008 with different heads and ignition. A 2000–2007 engine and a 2008–2009 engine should not be swapped blindly.
Which Hemi
The 5.7L gained cylinder deactivation in 2006, was revised for 2009 and has its own version in the 2011-on truck. Match the model year, and tell us if yours is a 6.4L or a Hellcat.
Which 3.6L
The Pentastar was updated for 2016. We match by model year rather than treating every 3.6L as the same.
The 2009 Hybrid
The Two-Mode Hybrid pairs the 5.7L with two electric motors and its own transmission, and it is rare. Tell us if your Durango is a Hybrid.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Durango engine problems
Oil sludge and engine failure — 4.7L, 2000–2007
Owners report oil sludge and outright engine failure on these years, typically around 100,000 miles, with the 2004 model drawing the most complaints. This is owner-reported rather than covered by a bulletin; the engine sludges if oil changes are skipped, and one overheat commonly causes head-gasket failure or cracked heads.
Cylinder head wear — 2011–2013 3.6L
Valve guide and seat wear in the left cylinder head causes misfires. Chrysler extended the warranty on that head to 10 years or 150,000 miles on 2011–2012 and some 2013 models; the cover has now expired. Separately, 2012 vehicles built between 31 August and 13 September 2011 were recalled (11V487) for connecting-rod bearing debris that can seize the engine.
Hemi tick — 5.7L with cylinder deactivation, 2006 on
Failed roller lifters wipe the camshaft lobes, causing ticking, misfires and loss of power, often ending in a replacement engine. A class action was filed over it. Owners of 2014 trucks describe ticking at start-up and failure around 80,000 miles.
Stalling from the power module — 2011–2013
A fuel-pump relay inside the TIPM power module fails and the Durango stalls or will not start, which is often mistaken for an engine or fuel-pump failure. Recalls 15V115 and 19V813 cover 2011–2013 models; have them checked by VIN before paying for an engine.

FAQ
Durango engine questions, answered
My 2011–2014 Durango died while driving. Is the engine failing?
Check the electrics first. 2011–2013 models were recalled twice for the TIPM fuel-pump relay (15V115 and 19V813), and 2011–2014 models for alternators that fail suddenly (14V634, 17V435 and 17V741). Both are often misdiagnosed as an engine fault.
Is there a 2010 Durango?
No. The second-generation truck ended with the 2009 model year and the third generation began with 2011, so a Durango described as a 2010 is either a 2009 or a 2011. The VIN settles it.
Will a Hemi from a Ram, Charger or Grand Cherokee fit my Durango?
The 5.7L was shared across Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Jeep, but each vehicle has its own version, the engine was revised in 2009 and the 2011-on Durango has its own again. Match the model year and send us your VIN so we can confirm.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
