Engine Options

Which engine does your Ram 2500 have?

The Ram 2500 was a Dodge until 2010 and a Ram from 2011, and across four generations it has carried two kinds of engine: the gasoline V8s and V10 — the Magnums, then the 5.7L and 6.4L Hemi — and the Cummins inline-six diesel, which has come in four distinct forms: the 12-valve 5.9L of 1994–1998, the 24-valve 5.9L from mid-1998 to 2002, the common-rail 5.9L of 2003–2007 and the 6.7L from mid-2007.

The table below lists what was offered when. The diesel changed in the middle of the 1998 and 2007 model years, so for those years we confirm the engine from the VIN and build date before we quote.

1994–2002Second generation
5.2L Magnum V81994–2001, light-duty 2500 only.
5.9L Magnum V8All years.
8.0L Magnum V10All years, and into 2003.
5.9L Cummins 12-valve (6BT)1994–1998, with the Bosch P7100 inline injection pump.
5.9L Cummins 24-valve (ISB)From mid-1998 (“1998.5”) to 2002, with the Bosch VP44 rotary pump; High Output version 2001–2002 with the six-speed manual only.
2003–2009Third generation
5.7L Hemi V82003–2008; revised for 2009, without cylinder deactivation.
8.0L Magnum V102003 only.
5.9L Cummins common-rail2003–2007; High Output 2003–2004, then a single higher rating from mid-2004.
6.7L CumminsFrom the January 2007 build (“2007.5”), with EGR, a particulate filter and a variable-geometry turbo.
2010–2018Fourth generation (2010 heavy-duty redesign)
5.7L Hemi V82010–2013.
6.4L Hemi V82014–2018.
6.7L CumminsAll years; rated differently behind the 68RFE automatic and the G56 manual.
2019–presentFifth generation
6.4L Hemi V8All years.
6.7L Cummins2019–2024 standard output; the High Output version was 3500 only.
6.7L Cummins (2025 on)A single 430-hp, 1,075 lb-ft rating shared with the 3500, behind a ZF eight-speed automatic.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which Cummins

The 12-valve, the 24-valve, the common-rail 5.9L and the 6.7L are four different engines with different injection systems. The 1998 and 2007 model years each have two of them, so we go by VIN and build date.

Transmission behind the diesel

The 6.7L carried different ratings behind the 68RFE automatic and the G56 manual, and the Aisin automatic was a 3500 fitment. Tell us which transmission your truck has.

Which Hemi

The 2003–2008 5.7L and the revised 2009-on engine are not interchangeable as units, and the heavy-duty 2009-on Hemi has no cylinder deactivation. From 2014 the V8 is the 6.4L.

Dodge or Ram

The badge changed from Dodge Ram to Ram for 2011, a year after the 2010 heavy-duty redesign. The engines carried over, but tell us the exact model year.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and build date before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Ram 2500 engine problems

VP44 pump and the “53” block — 24-valve 5.9L, 1998.5–2002

The VP44 rotary injection pump fails more often than the 12-valve’s P7100 pump, and the engine has had injector problems. Blocks cast with a “53” mark on 1999–2000 trucks can crack through the water jacket and leak coolant.

Timing-case dowel pin — 12-valve 5.9L, 1994–1998

Owners widely report the dowel pin in the timing case backing out into the gear train on the 12-valve engine, with serious damage if it does. Ask whether it has been dealt with on any 12-valve truck.

6.7L turbo, fuel pump and grid heater — 2007.5 on

The variable-geometry turbo fails, usually noticed when the exhaust brake stops working. Two recalls matter before an engine is blamed: the CP4 high-pressure fuel pump on 2019–2020 trucks can fail and stall the engine without warning (21V880), and the grid-heater relay on 2021–2023 trucks can short and start a fire (23V060). Earlier recalls covered a water-pump leak on 2013–2017 trucks (17V562) and a fuel-heater connector on 2010–2014 trucks (14V635).

Hemi tick — 5.7L and 6.4L

Failed roller lifters wipe the camshaft lobes, causing ticking, misfires and loss of power, often ending in a replacement engine. A class action was filed over it.

FAQ

Ram 2500 engine questions, answered

Which Cummins does my Ram 2500 have?

By year: the 12-valve to early 1998, the 24-valve VP44 engine from mid-1998 to 2002, the common-rail 5.9L for 2003–2007, and the 6.7L from the January 2007 build onward. For a 1998 or 2007 truck the build date decides, so send us the VIN.

Does the Ram 2500 get the High Output Cummins?

Not until 2025. Before that the High Output engine was 3500 only; from 2025 both trucks share a single 430-hp Cummins behind a ZF eight-speed automatic.

Will a Hemi from a Ram 1500 or Durango fit my Ram 2500?

The 5.7L and 6.4L were shared across Ram and Dodge, but the heavy-duty trucks have their own versions and the 5.7L was revised in 2009. Match the model year and send us your VIN so we can confirm.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
