Engine Options

Which engine does your Charger have?

The Charger name covers three very different cars here. The 1983–1987 car was a front-wheel-drive hatchback with four-cylinder power: a Peugeot-built 1.6L in the early base cars and Chrysler’s 2.2L in standard, high-output, Turbo I and intercooled Turbo II forms, the turbocharged versions going into the Shelby models. Dodge sold no Charger for 1988–2005.

The name came back on a rear-drive sedan. The 2006–2010 LX cars had 2.7L and 3.5L V6s and the 5.7L and 6.1L Hemi V8s; the 2011–2023 LD cars replaced both V6s with the 3.6L Pentastar, added the 6.4L Hemi and, from 2015, the supercharged 6.2L Hellcat.

The table below lists what was offered when. The 2.2L came in four versions, the 5.7L was revised for 2009 and the Hellcat gained a higher-output Redeye version in 2021, so we confirm the exact engine from the VIN.

2.2L fourChrysler’s own four. Optional at first and the base engine from 1986.

2.2L Turbo I fourTurbocharged, with multi-point fuel injection. Shelby Charger from 1985.
2.2L Turbo II fourIntercooled, for more power than the Turbo I. 1987 Shelby models only.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which 2.2L — 1983–1987

Besides the 1.6L, the front-drive Charger used four versions of the 2.2L: standard, high-output, Turbo I and the intercooled Turbo II. Each is a different engine, so tell us the trim, such as Shelby Charger or GLHS, and send the VIN.

Which 5.7L

The 5.7L Hemi was revised for 2009 with variable cam timing, so a 2006–2008 engine and a 2009-on engine are not the same unit. The model year decides which one you need.

Two V6 families

The 2.7L and 3.5L of the LX cars have nothing in common with the 3.6L Pentastar of the LD cars, and the 2.7L and 3.5L are different engines from each other. Match the year and the size.

Hellcat or Redeye

The supercharged 6.2L came in standard Hellcat form from 2015 and in the higher-output Redeye form from 2021. Tell us which badge is on the car.

Rear- or all-wheel drive

Both the LX and the LD Charger were offered with all-wheel drive. Tell us the drive type with the model year so the right assembly is quoted.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Charger engine problems

Oil sludge and timing chain — 2.7L, 2006–2010

The 2.7L sludges when oil changes are stretched, its water pump can leak coolant into the crankcase, and the timing-chain tensioner fails.

Cylinder head wear — 2011–2013 3.6L

Valve guide and seat wear in the left cylinder head causes misfires. Chrysler extended the warranty on that head to 10 years or 150,000 miles on 2011–2012 and some 2013 models; the cover has now expired.

Hemi tick — 5.7L and 6.4L with cylinder deactivation

Failed roller lifters wipe the camshaft lobes, causing ticking, misfires and loss of power, often ending in a replacement engine.

FAQ

Charger engine questions, answered

Which engine does my Charger have?

The 1983–1987 hatchback had the 1.6L or one of four versions of the 2.2L, the turbocharged ones in Shelby models. The 2006–2010 LX had the 2.7L, 3.5L, 5.7L and 6.1L; the 2011–2023 LD had the 3.6L, 5.7L, 6.4L and the supercharged 6.2L. The badge gives a clue (SE, SXT, R/T, Scat Pack, SRT, Shelby), but the VIN is the sure way. Send it to us and we’ll confirm.

My Charger 2.2 is older than 1983. Which model do I choose?

Choose Omni in the quote form. Before 1983 the Charger 2.2 was an option package on the Dodge Omni 024, not a model of its own. Mention the package so we quote the 2.2L.

Will a Hemi from a Ram or Durango fit my Charger?

The Hemi was shared across many Chrysler vehicles, but each has its own version and the engine was revised in 2009. Match the model year and send us your VIN so we can confirm.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
