Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Charger have?
The 1983–1987 Charger was a front-wheel-drive hatchback, built with Chrysler’s own transaxles: a four-speed or five-speed manual, or the A413 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic. There was no Charger for 1988–2005.
Every Charger since 2006 has been an automatic. The 2006–2010 LX cars used Chrysler’s 42RLE four-speed or the Mercedes-designed W5A580 five-speed, depending on the engine; the 2011–2023 LD cars started with the W5A580 and moved to ZF-designed eight-speeds in three sizes, on some V6 cars from 2012 and across the range from 2015.
The table below shows what was fitted when. The V6 and the V8s changed to the eight-speed in different years, so we confirm the exact unit from your VIN.
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| Four-speed manual | Fitted to base cars. |
| Five-speed manual | Standard in the Shelby Charger. |
| A413 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic | Optional with the 2.2L. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 42RLE four-speed automatic | 2.7L; also some rear-drive 3.5L cars. |
| W5A580 five-speed automatic | The other 3.5L cars, including all-wheel drive; every 5.7L and 6.1L. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| W5A580 five-speed automatic | 3.6L 2011, and on some 3.6L cars 2012–2014; 5.7L 2011–2014 and 6.4L 2012–2014. |
| 845RE eight-speed automatic | 3.6L: some 2012–2014 cars, then standard on retail cars 2015–2023. |
| 8HP70 eight-speed automatic | 5.7L and 6.4L, 2015–2023. |
| 8HP90 eight-speed automatic | Supercharged 6.2L SRT Hellcat models, 2015–2023. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Front-drive cars, 1983–1987
The hatchback’s manual transaxles and A413 automatic have nothing in common with the rear-drive cars. Tell us the engine and whether the car has four gears, five gears or an automatic.
Match the engine
Each engine was paired with its own transmission. A unit from behind a 3.6L does not suit a Hemi, and the Hellcat’s 8HP90 is different again.
Five-speed or eight-speed
A 2012–2014 V6 Charger may have either the W5A580 or the 845RE, and the V8s switched to the 8HP70 for 2015. The VIN tells us which one your car left the factory with.
Eight-speeds are not interchangeable
The 845RE, 8HP70 and 8HP90 share a ZF design but are sized for different engines and torque. A replacement also has to be programmed to the car.
Rear- or all-wheel drive
Both the LX and the LD Charger were sold with all-wheel drive, and the all-wheel-drive versions use different transmission assemblies. Give us the drive type with the model year.
Pursuit police cars
The Charger Pursuit was built to its own specification. Send the VIN rather than matching it to a retail Charger of the same year.
Common Problems
Common Charger transmission problems
W5A580 conductor plate — 2006–2014
The conductor plate, which carries the internal speed sensors, fails and puts the car into limp mode, typically stuck in second gear with speed-sensor fault codes.
Eight-speed shift quality — 2012–2023
Harsh or inconsistent shifts and delayed engagement. Many cases are cured by a transmission software update, so have the software checked before replacing the unit.

FAQ
Charger transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Charger have?
The 1983–1987 hatchback has a four- or five-speed manual or the A413 automatic. The 2006–2010 LX has the 42RLE or the W5A580, depending on the engine. On the 2011–2023 LD, the W5A580 was used to 2014 and the eight-speeds after that: the 845RE with the 3.6L, the 8HP70 with the 5.7L and 6.4L and the 8HP90 in the Hellcat. Your VIN confirms it.
My Charger 2.2 is from 1981 or 1982. How do I quote it?
Before 1983 the Charger 2.2 was a package on the Dodge 024 hatchback rather than a separate model. Select Omni on the quote form and note the Charger 2.2 package.
Will a transmission from a Durango or Grand Cherokee fit?
Those vehicles use some of the same transmission families, but the version has to match your engine, model year and drive type. Send us your VIN.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
