Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Ranger have?
The compact Ranger sold from 1983 to 2011 used three-, four- and five-speed automatics and manual gearboxes from Toyo Kogyo, Mitsubishi and Mazda, and which one a truck has depends on its year, engine and drivetrain. The Ranger that returned in 2019 has only ever had a ten-speed automatic.
The table below shows what was fitted when. On the older trucks the automatic changed with the year and the engine, so we match it by VIN and by the identification tag on the transmission.
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Toyo Kogyo four- and five-speed manuals | Code: TK4, TK5 | The four-speed was standard in 1983 and 1984. |
| Mitsubishi five-speed manuals | Code: FM132, FM145, FM146 | |
| M5OD-R1 five-speed manual | Mazda-built; the standard transmission from 1989. | |
| Three-speed automatic | Code: C3, C5 | 1983–1984. |
| A4LD four-speed automatic | From 1985. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| M5OD-R1 five-speed manual | All engines. | |
| A4LD four-speed automatic | 1993–1994. | |

| 5R55E five-speed automatic | With the 4.0L V6, 1997. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Two- or four-wheel drive
A 4x4 transmission has a different output and tail housing from a 4x2 one, and they do not interchange. Tell us which your truck has.
Match the engine
From 2001 the 3.0L V6 was paired with the 5R44E and the 4.0L V6 with the heavier-duty 5R55E. Both are five-speeds, but they are different transmissions.
First-generation manuals
Manual trucks built from 1983 to 1992 can have a Toyo Kogyo, Mitsubishi or Mazda gearbox depending on the year, engine and drivetrain. Tell us all three and we will match the right one.
Old truck, new truck
Nothing from a 1983–2011 Ranger fits a 2019-on truck, and the 2019–2023 and 2024-on trucks are different generations, so tell us the model year as well as the engine.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Ranger transmission problems
A4LD failures — 1985–1994
The A4LD has a reputation for wearing out early, and overheating in trucks that tow or carry heavy loads speeds that up. Slipping, a late or missing shift into overdrive and burnt fluid are the usual signs.
Worn servo bores — 1998–2011 automatics
The servo bores in the aluminum case wear with age, letting fluid pressure leak past the servos so the bands slip. Flared or slipping shifts and burnt fluid are the usual signs.
10R80 harsh shifts — 2019–2023
The 10R80 ten-speed is known for harsh or clunky shifts, especially between the lower gears, and for delayed engagement into drive or reverse.

FAQ
Ranger transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Ranger have?
It depends on the year and engine. Automatic trucks have a three-speed in 1983 and 1984, the A4LD four-speed from 1985 to 1994, the 4R44E or 4R55E four-speed from 1995, and a five-speed behind the 4.0L from 1997 and behind the 2.3L and 3.0L from 2001. 2019–2023 trucks have the 10R80 ten-speed, and 2024-on trucks also have a ten-speed automatic. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Was the new Ranger ever sold with a manual?
Not in the US. Every Ranger from 2019 on has a ten-speed automatic.
Will a transmission from an Explorer fit?
The 5R55 family was used in the Explorer too, but each vehicle has its own version. The unit has to match your engine, drivetrain and model year, so send us your VIN.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
