Transmission Options
Which transmission does your F-250 and F-350 Super Duty have?
The Super Duty has had four generations of automatic — the four-speed 4R100, the five-speed 5R110W TorqShift, the six-speed 6R140 and the ten-speed 10R140 — plus ZF manuals through 2010. Since 2011 every truck has been an automatic.
The table below shows what was fitted when. In several years the engine decided the transmission: the 6.0L diesel got the TorqShift two years before the gas engines, and the 6.2L kept the six-speed after the 7.3L and 6.7L moved to ten speeds. We confirm from your VIN.
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 4R100 four-speed automatic | With the 5.4L, 6.8L, 7.3L and early 6.0L, until the TorqShift took over. Built with a power take-off option from 1999. |
| 5R110W TorqShift five-speed automatic | Introduced in 2003 with the 6.0L Power Stroke; behind the 5.4L and 6.8L as well from 2005. |
| ZF S5-42 and S5-47 five-speed manuals | Gas engines, in the early years of this generation. |
| ZF S6-650 six-speed manual | Diesel engines, with an integrated power take-off. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 5R110W TorqShift five-speed automatic | Every engine: 6.4L diesel, 5.4L and V10. |
| ZF S6-650 six-speed manual | Diesel engines. The last manual Super Duty. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 6R140 TorqShift six-speed automatic | Every engine, with or without power take-off. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 6R140 TorqShift six-speed automatic | Every engine in 2017–2019; the 6.2L only from 2020 (“TorqShift-G”). |
| 10R140 TorqShift ten-speed automatic | From 2020, standard with the 7.3L and 6.7L, and with every engine on the F-350. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 10R140 TorqShift ten-speed automatic | 7.3L, 6.7L and 6.7L High Output. |
| 10R100 ten-speed automatic | With the 6.8L Godzilla V8. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
F-250 or F-350
The two trucks share transmissions, so this page covers both. The quote form lists them separately and opens on the F-250; if yours is an F-350, choose F-350 in the form.
Match the engine
A 2003–2004 truck has the 4R100 or the TorqShift depending on its engine, a 2020–2022 6.2L keeps the six-speed while the 7.3L and 6.7L have the ten-speed, and the 2023-on 6.8L has its own 10R100. The unit has to match the engine it was built for.
Two- or four-wheel drive
A 4x4 transmission has a different output shaft and tail housing from a 4x2 one, and they do not interchange. Tell us which your truck has.
Power take-off
The 4R100, the TorqShift and the 6R140 were all built with and without a power take-off provision. If your truck runs a PTO, say so.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common F-250 and F-350 Super Duty transmission problems
6R140 — rolls in Park, 2017
Recall 17V225 covers 2017 F-250s with the 6.2L and the six-speed: a damaged park-rod actuating plate can let the truck roll away in Park. The repair is free at a dealer, so have it checked before suspecting the transmission.
10R140 — Park mechanism, 2020
On 2020 diesel trucks an internal washer can disintegrate and its debris jam the Park mechanism; recall 22V256 has dealers replace a gearset. A much smaller recall, 20V365, replaced the whole transmission on a few 2020 diesels built with an untempered torque-converter damper plate.
Rear axle shaft — 2023
Not the transmission, but it can feel like one: recall 23V595 covers 2023 trucks whose left rear axle shaft may break, which means loss of drive. Have any open recall done before paying for a replacement.

FAQ
F-250 and F-350 Super Duty transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Super Duty have?
Broadly: the 4R100 four-speed on 1999–2004 gas trucks and 7.3L diesels, the 5R110W TorqShift behind the 6.0L from 2003 and every engine from 2005 to 2010, the 6R140 six-speed from 2011 to 2019 (and with the 6.2L to 2022), and the ten-speed 10R140 behind the 7.3L and 6.7L from 2020, with the 10R100 behind the 6.8L from 2023. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Can I get a manual transmission for my Super Duty?
For trucks through 2010, yes: ZF five-speeds behind the gas engines in the early years and the ZF S6-650 six-speed behind the diesels. No Super Duty has been sold with a manual since 2011.
My truck rolled away in Park. Is that a known fault?
On two groups of trucks it is a recall: 2017 6.2L trucks with the six-speed (17V225) and 2020 diesels with the ten-speed (22V256). Both are repaired free at a Ford dealer. Have the recall done first; if the problem remains, send us your VIN.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
