Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Expedition have?

Every Expedition has been an automatic: four-speeds through 2006, with the 4.6L and 5.4L each getting their own unit in the early years, the six-speed 6R75 and 6R80 from 2007 to 2017, and the ten-speed 10R80 since 2018.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Through 2004 the engine decided the transmission, and for 2003–2004 the sources themselves disagree on which four-speed the 5.4L had, so we confirm from your VIN.

1997–2002First generation (UN93)
4R70W four-speed automaticWith the 4.6L.
E4OD four-speed automaticWith the 5.4L, 1997–1998.
4R100 four-speed automaticThe strengthened and renamed E4OD, with the 5.4L from 1999.
2003–2006Second generation (U222)
4R70W four-speed automaticWith the 4.6L and the 2-valve 5.4L, 2003–2004. Some sources place the stronger 4R75W behind the 2004 5.4L instead.
4R75E four-speed automaticWith the 3-valve 5.4L, 2005–2006. Throttle-by-wire control and a turbine speed sensor.
2007–2017Third generation (U324), including the EL
6R75 six-speed automaticWith the 5.4L, 2007–2008.
6R80 six-speed automatic2009–2017, with the 5.4L and then the 3.5L EcoBoost.
2018–presentFourth and fifth generations
10R80 ten-speed automaticEvery engine, including the High Output EcoBoost.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

From 1997 to 2002 the 4.6L had the 4R70W while the 5.4L had the E4OD and then the 4R100. The transmission has to match the engine it was built for.

2003–2004: which four-speed

Model listings give the 4R70W through 2004, but transmission references put the stronger 4R75W, with a different ring gear, converter and pump, behind the 2004 5.4L. We check the tag and VIN rather than assume.

4R70W or 4R75E

The 2005 change to the 3-valve 5.4L brought the 4R75E, with throttle-by-wire control and a turbine speed sensor. It is not the same unit as the earlier four-speed.

Two- or four-wheel drive

A four-wheel-drive transmission differs from a two-wheel-drive one at the output. Tell us which your Expedition has.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Expedition transmission problems

4R70W — converter shudder, 1997–2004

The torque converter’s lock-up clutch shudders once the fluid has degraded. Ford replaced the intermediate one-way clutch with a mechanical diode in 1998 for durability.

10R80 — Park and shift-cable recalls, 2018

Recall 18V213 covers a small number of 2018 trucks built without a roll pin, which can mean no Park, and recall 18V214 a shift-cable clip that unseats so the gear display is wrong. Both are free dealer repairs.

10R80 — park pawl, 2018–2021

Recall 26V402, covering 2018–2021 Expeditions among 741,195 vehicles, addresses a park pawl that can engage while the truck is moving and damage the park system. The fix is a software update plus replacement of any damaged parts, and the remedy is expected in April 2027.

10R80 — harsh shifts, 2018 on

Harsh or slipping shifts and drops to neutral are a frequent owner complaint to NHTSA on 2018 trucks, with the CDF drum often named. The recalls above are for the park system, not shift quality.

FAQ

Expedition transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Expedition have?

A four-speed through 2006 — the 4R70W with the 4.6L, the E4OD and 4R100 with the 5.4L to 2002, and the 4R75E with the 3-valve 5.4L in 2005–2006 — then the 6R75 in 2007–2008, the 6R80 from 2009 to 2017 and the 10R80 from 2018. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My 2018–2021 Expedition has an open 10R80 recall. Should I wait for it?

Yes. Recall 26V402 includes replacing any parts the park pawl has damaged, free of charge, and Ford expects the remedy to be available in April 2027. Have a dealer check your VIN before paying for a transmission.

Which four-speed is in my 2003–2004 Expedition?

Model listings give the 4R70W for both years; transmission references say the 2004 5.4L has the strengthened 4R75W. The two look alike but differ inside, so we identify yours from the tag and VIN before we quote.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
