Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Mustang have?

The Mustang has been sold with both manual and automatic transmissions in every model year, often with more than one manual in the same year, depending on the engine and trim. Some versions had only one choice: the 2024-on EcoBoost is automatic only, and the Shelby GT350 was manual only.

The table below shows what was fitted when. A transmission has to match the engine it was built for, so we confirm from the VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which manual

The GT and the V6 often had different manuals in the same year, and the Shelby, Mach 1 and Dark Horse use gearboxes of their own. Match the transmission to the engine.

Fox body automatics

A 1980–1993 automatic is a three-speed C3, C4 or C5, the four-speed AOD behind the 5.0L from 1984, or the A4LD behind the four-cylinder from 1987. The engine and model year decide which one fits.

T-5 versions

The T-5 was built in versions for the four-cylinder, V6 and V8, with different gear ratios and strength, and the V8’s became the heavy-duty “World Class” unit for 1985. Match it to the engine and year.

Six- or ten-speed automatic

The 6R80 ran to 2017 and the 10R80 took over for 2018. They need different electronics and are not interchangeable.

GT500 gearboxes

The Shelby GT500 used a TR-6060 six-speed manual from 2007 to 2014 and a TR-9070 seven-speed dual-clutch from 2020 to 2022. Neither is the same unit as a GT’s.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Mustang transmission problems

AOD throttle-valve linkage — 1984–1993

The AOD’s line pressure is set by a throttle-valve cable or rod linked to the throttle. If it is misadjusted or broken, pressure runs too low, and the transmission shifts early and soft, slips and burns its clutches.

MT-82 shifting — 2011 on

Stiff, notchy shifts when cold, grinding as the synchros wear, and gears that are hard to select at high rpm.

6R80 lead frame — 2011–2017

The lead frame carries the transmission’s internal wiring and speed sensors. When it fails, the speedometer can drop to zero, a wrench light comes on and the transmission shifts harshly or holds one gear. The fix is a new lead frame, not a new transmission.

10R80 harsh shifts — 2018 on

Harsh or delayed engagement into drive or reverse, and harsh or erratic shifts between gears.

FAQ

Mustang transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Mustang have?

It depends on the engine, trim and model year — three-speed automatics and four-speed manuals in the early 1980s, the T-5 manual from 1983 and the AOD automatic from 1984, four-speed automatics and several manuals from 1994 to 2004, five-speed automatics and manuals from 2005, the 6R80 and MT-82 from 2011, and the 10R80 from 2018. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Can I swap an automatic for a manual?

It is a major conversion, not a replacement — pedals, wiring, driveshaft and electronics all change. We supply like-for-like replacements.

Will a transmission from an F-150 fit?

The 6R80 and 10R80 families are shared with the F-150, but each vehicle has its own version. The unit has to match your engine and model year, so send us your VIN.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
