Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Escape have?
Automatic Escapes went from a four-speed to a six-speed in 2009 and an eight-speed in 2020, and the hybrids have always had a transaxle of their own. Which one you have follows the model year and engine.
The table below shows what was fitted when. We confirm the exact unit from your VIN.
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| Five-speed manual | 2.0L and 2.3L four-cylinder models. |
| CD4E four-speed automatic | 2.3L and 3.0L V6 models. |
| Hybrid transaxle | Escape Hybrid, 2005–2008. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 6F35 six-speed automatic | 2.5L and 3.0L V6 models. |
| Five-speed manual | 2.5L front-wheel-drive models. |
| Hybrid transaxle | Escape Hybrid. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 6F35 six-speed automatic | Every engine. No manual was offered. |
| Transmission | Notes |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Front- or all-wheel drive
All-wheel-drive Escapes use a different version of the transaxle. Tell us which your car has.
Match the engine
The 6F35 behind a 1.6L EcoBoost is not the same unit as the one behind a 2.5L, even though both are six-speeds.
Hybrids
The hybrid transaxle has the motors built in and does not interchange with a conventional automatic.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Escape transmission problems
Four-speed failure — 2001–2008
Outright failure, and loss of second and fourth gear on 2007–2008 cars, are the most-reported faults on the early Escape; they are usually traced to worn valve-body bores, broken bands or a failed one-way clutch.
Six-speed shudder and failure — 2009–2019
Shudder on acceleration, harsh or delayed shifts and complete failures are widely reported, with a cluster of 2014 cars failing around 70,000 miles. Ford issued service messages but no recall, and a class action was dismissed in 2024.
Shifter cable bushing — 2013–2019
A failing bushing can leave the car out of Park while the lever shows Park. Ford recalled almost three million vehicles for it in 2022; check by VIN that it was done.
Harsh engagement and reverse faults — 2020–2026
Harsh shifts into Reverse or Drive, delayed reverse and erratic shifting on the eight-speed. Ford’s bulletins trace it to debris in the valve body and, on later cars, a one-way clutch, with software updates and part replacement as remedies.
Hybrid recalls — 2005–2008 and 2020–2022
The early hybrid’s electronics coolant pump can fail and shut the car down (recalled in 2014), and 2020–2022 hybrids were recalled in 2024 for software that could shift to neutral.

FAQ
Escape transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Escape have?
A four-speed automatic or five-speed manual to 2008, the 6F35 six-speed from 2009 to 2019, and the 8F35 eight-speed from 2020. Hybrids use their own transaxle in every generation. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Can I fit a six-speed from a Fusion or Edge?
They use the same 6F35 family, but each vehicle and engine has its own version. The unit has to match your car, so send us your VIN.
My 2013–2019 Escape rolled with the lever in Park. Is the transmission faulty?
Probably not the transmission itself. That is the shifter-cable bushing fault, which Ford recalled in 2022. Have the recall done before considering a replacement.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
