Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Focus have?
For its first twelve years the automatic Focus had one transmission, the 4F27E four-speed. The 2012 car replaced it with the DPS6 PowerShift, a dry dual-clutch gearbox with no torque converter, and the 1.0L EcoBoost cars later got a conventional 6F15 six-speed automatic instead. Manuals ran alongside throughout, from the IB5 five-speed to the Getrag six-speeds of the SVT, ST and RS.
The table below shows what was fitted when. A 2012–2018 car can have a dual-clutch, a torque-converter automatic or a manual depending on engine and year, so we confirm the unit from your VIN.
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 4F27E four-speed automatic | All engines. |
| IB5 five-speed manual | 2.0L SPI and Zetec. |
| Getrag MT285 six-speed manual | SVT Focus, 2002–2004. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 4F27E four-speed automatic | All engines. |
| Five-speed manual | The ST’s is the MTX-75. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 4F27E four-speed automatic | Specified for Mercon LV fluid from 2008, Mercon V before. |
| Five-speed manual |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| DPS6 PowerShift six-speed dual-clutch | 2.0L GDI automatics, from 2012 to at least 2016. |
| Five-speed manual | 2.0L GDI; standard on non-ST cars from 2013. |
| 6F15 six-speed automatic | 1.0L EcoBoost automatics. A torque-converter automatic, not a PowerShift. |
| Six-speed manual | 1.0L EcoBoost (Getrag B6), ST and RS. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Dual-clutch or torque converter
A 2012–2018 automatic is either a DPS6 PowerShift behind the 2.0L or a 6F15 behind the 1.0L EcoBoost. They are different designs and do not interchange. The 6F35 used in other Fords was never fitted to a US Focus.
Manuals follow the engine
The IB5 sits behind the SPI and Zetec, the MTX-75 behind the 2005–2007 ST, and Getrag six-speeds behind the SVT, the 1.0L EcoBoost, the ST and the RS. Tell us the engine as well as the year.
Which 4F27E
The four-speed ran from 2000 to 2011 behind every engine and was specified for Mercon V fluid through 2007 and Mercon LV from 2008. We match it by model year and engine.
PowerShift versions and programming
Ford revised the DPS6’s clutch pack and control module at least six times and changed the clutch material in 2016. Tell us the model year and any repair history, and expect the replacement to need programming to the car.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Focus transmission problems
PowerShift clutch shudder — 2012–2016
Shudder on take-off, slipping, bucking and delayed engagement on the DPS6 dry dual-clutch, traced by Ford to input-shaft and rear-main seals leaking onto the clutches and a faulty release bearing. Ford revised the clutch pack repeatedly, changed its material in 2016 and extended the clutch warranty to 7 years or 100,000 miles. Manual cars are unaffected.
PowerShift control module — 2012–2016
A failing transmission control module, or a bad connector pin, shifter motor or ground, brings warning lights, loss of drive and clutch fault codes. Ford extended the TCM warranty to 7 years or 100,000 miles, and the Ford PowerShift class settlement paid 2012–2016 owners for repeat repairs, but claims closed in 2020 and the extended cover has run out on most cars. NHTSA never required a recall.
Clutch fracture — 1.0L EcoBoost manual, 2016–2018
The clutch can fracture and leak fluid onto hot parts, with a fire risk. Ford recalled these cars (recall 18V845, repeated in 2026 as 26V376); check by VIN that it was done before suspecting the gearbox.

FAQ
Focus transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Focus have?
A 4F27E four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual from 2000 to 2011, with a six-speed manual on the SVT. From 2012 the 2.0L automatic is the DPS6 PowerShift dual-clutch, the 1.0L EcoBoost automatic is the 6F15 six-speed, and the ST and RS are manual only. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
My 2012–2016 Focus shudders from a stop. Can I still claim under the PowerShift settlement?
The Ford PowerShift class settlement covered 2012–2016 Focus automatics, but its claim deadlines passed in October 2020, and the 7-year/100,000-mile extensions on the clutch and control module have expired for most cars. Ask a Ford dealer to check the VIN for any remaining coverage before paying for a transmission.
Is a 6F35 from an Escape or Fusion a match for my Focus?
No. The US Focus never used the 6F35. The 2012–2018 automatics are the DPS6 dual-clutch behind the 2.0L and the 6F15 behind the 1.0L EcoBoost, and neither is a 6F35.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
