Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Edge have?
Every Edge is an automatic with the transmission across the car. The six-speed 6F50 served from 2007 through 2018, with a heavier six-speed from the same family behind the 2.7L Sport, and the 2019 refresh brought eight-speeds with stop-start.
The table below shows what was fitted when. The engine decides the unit, and for two cases — the 2012–2014 2.0L and the 2019-on ST — the sources disagree on exactly which one, so we confirm from your VIN.
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 6F50 six-speed automatic | Every engine; the Sport added paddle shifters. Some sources list the lighter 6F35 behind the 2.0L EcoBoost instead. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 6F50 six-speed automatic | 2.0L EcoBoost and 3.5L V6. |
| Heavier-duty six-speed automatic | 2.7L EcoBoost Sport. Usually identified as the 6F55, the unit fitted to the 2.7L Fusion Sport. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 8F35 eight-speed automatic | 2.0L EcoBoost, with stop-start. |
| 8F57 eight-speed automatic | ST with the 2.7L EcoBoost, according to transmission references; the model listing gives the 8F35 for every 2019-on Edge. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Match the engine
The 2.7L Sport and ST have heavier-duty units than the 2.0L and 3.5L cars of the same year. A transmission from a 2.0L car is not right for a 2.7L.
Six-speed or eight-speed
The 2019 refresh replaced the six-speed with an eight-speed with stop-start, so a 2018 and a 2019 Edge with the same engine need different units. Match the model year.
Which eight-speed
The sources disagree on whether the ST has the 8F35 or the higher-torque 8F57. We identify the unit from the tag and VIN rather than assume.
Front- or all-wheel drive
All-wheel-drive versions differ from front-wheel-drive ones. Tell us which your Edge has.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Edge transmission problems
Torque converter — 2.0L six-speed, 2017
Recalls 17V427 and 18V390 cover 2017 2.0L cars whose torque-converter weld studs can fail, so the car loses drive. The converter is replaced free at a dealer.
Shifter-cable bushing — 2015–2018
Recall 22V413, covering 2015–2018 Edges among 2.9 million vehicles, addresses a shifter-cable bushing that degrades so the car may not actually be in Park when the lever says it is. Have it done before suspecting the transmission.
Accumulator end cap — eight-speed, 2019–2020
On a small number of 2019–2020 cars the bolts on the start/stop accumulator end cap were loose, letting fluid leak with a risk of lost drive or fire; recall 20V550 covers them.
Rear drive unit — 2021
Not the transmission, but on the same driveline: recall 21V011 covers 2021 all-wheel-drive cars whose rear drive unit may have left the factory with too little lubricant.

FAQ
Edge transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Edge have?
A six-speed from 2007 to 2018 — the 6F50 on most cars, a heavier six-speed on the 2.7L Sport — and an eight-speed with stop-start from 2019. Send us your VIN and we will confirm the exact unit.
My 2017 Edge lost drive suddenly. Is it the transmission?
On a 2017 2.0L car, check the torque-converter recall first (17V427 and 18V390). The weld studs fail and the car loses drive; a dealer replaces the converter free. If the recall was already done, send us your VIN.
Which eight-speed does the Edge ST have?
The sources disagree: the model listing gives the 8F35 for every 2019-on Edge, while transmission references give the ST the higher-torque 8F57. We go by the tag on your unit and your VIN, not by the badge.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
