Ford Transmissions
Finding the right Ford transmission
Ford identifies its automatics with codes such as 4R70W, 6R80 and 10R80 — the first number is the number of gears — and the same family is shared across trucks, SUVs and cars. That makes a good used unit easier to find.
A transmission still has to match the engine, the drivetrain and the model year it was built for. In some years Ford fitted two different transmissions to the same model, depending on the engine, so give us your VIN and we’ll match it.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Ford vehicles
4R70W and 4R75E — four-speed
The four-speed automatics in the F-150 to 2010, the Crown Victoria and Town Car to 2011, the Mustang to 2004 and E-Series vans to 2014.
5R55 — five-speed
Five-speed automatics in the Ranger (1997–2011), the Explorer (1997–2010), the Lincoln LS, the Thunderbird and the 2005–2010 Mustang.
6F35, 6F50 and 6F55 — six-speed, front-wheel drive
The six-speeds in front- and all-wheel-drive models: Edge, Taurus, Flex, Fusion, Escape and the 2011–2019 Explorer.
6R80 and 6R140 — six-speed, rear-wheel drive
The 6R80 in the F-150 (2009–2020), Expedition, Navigator and Mustang, and the heavier 6R140 in Super Duty trucks from 2011.
10R80 and 10R140 — ten-speed
From 2017: the 10R80 in the F-150, Mustang, Expedition, Ranger and Bronco, the 10R60 in the Explorer, and the 10R140 in Super Duty trucks.
PowerShift dual-clutch
The six-speed dual-clutch automatic in the Fiesta and the 2012–2018 Focus, known for shudder and hesitation.

FAQ
Used Ford transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Ford has?
We identify it from your VIN, together with the engine and whether the vehicle is two- or four-wheel drive. Send us those details and we will confirm the exact unit.
Do you supply both 4x2 and 4x4 transmissions?
Yes. They are different units and do not interchange, so tell us which your vehicle has — or send the VIN and we will check.
Do you supply the PowerShift transmission for the Focus and Fiesta?
Yes. Tell us the model and model year and we will check availability and match the right unit.
Does a used Ford transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
