Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Fusion have?

The first Fusion paired a Mazda-designed FNR5 five-speed automatic with the 2.3L and an Aisin six-speed with the V6s, then moved to Ford’s own 6F35 six-speed for the 2010 facelift. The 2013–2020 car used the 6F35 behind every four-cylinder, the stronger 6F55 behind the 2.7L Sport and the HF35 eCVT in the Hybrid and Energi. Manuals were offered only on a few four-cylinder cars.

The table below shows what was fitted when. The five-speed and the Aisin six-speed are often mixed up, so we confirm the unit from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Five-speed or six-speed

On a 2006–2009 car the 2.3L has the FNR5 five-speed and the V6 the Aisin six-speed. The Aisin is often wrongly called a five-speed; tell us the engine and we will match the unit.

Match the engine

The 6F35 was fitted behind the 2.5L, 1.6L, 1.5L and 2.0L, but the unit still has to match the engine and model year. The 2.7L Sport uses the larger 6F55 instead.

Front- or all-wheel drive

All-wheel-drive 2.0L EcoBoost cars, the Sport and the 2007–2009 V6 use a different version of the transaxle. Tell us which your car has.

Hybrids

The HF35 eCVT and the earlier Aisin power-split unit have the motors built in and do not interchange with a conventional automatic, or with each other.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Fusion transmission problems

Shifter-cable bushing — 2013–2016

The bushing on the shift cable degrades and detaches, so the car may not be in Park when the lever says it is, and the key can come out of the ignition out of Park. Ford recalled these cars three times (18V471, 19V362 and 22V413), finally fitting a protective cap; check by VIN that the last one was done. It is a cable fault, not the transmission.

Torque-converter failure — 2017 2.0L EcoBoost

Weld studs on the torque converter can fail and the car loses drive. Ford recalled 2017 2.0L six-speed cars (recall 17V427) and replaces the converter; check by VIN before buying a transmission.

Clutch fracture — 1.6L EcoBoost manual, 2013–2014

The clutch can fracture and leak fluid onto hot parts, with a fire risk. Ford recalled these cars (recall 18V169, repeated in 2026 as 26V376); have it done before suspecting the gearbox.

Hybrid control faults — 2010–2012 Hybrid and 2019–2020 Energi

The 2010–2012 Hybrid can lose electric running, which Ford’s 2019 bulletin and 2022 customer program cure with free control-module software. The 2019–2020 Energi was recalled (23V440) for a battery energy control module that can be damaged and cause a loss of power. No systemic hardware failure of the HF35 itself is documented.

FAQ

Fusion transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Fusion have?

The FNR5 five-speed behind the 2.3L and the Aisin six-speed behind the V6 in 2006–2009; the 6F35 on most 2010–2020 cars, with the Aisin on the 2010–2012 Sport and the 6F55 on the 2017–2019 Sport; and a hybrid transaxle in every Hybrid and Energi. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Is the Fusion’s Aisin automatic a five-speed?

No. The Aisin unit is a six-speed, fitted to the V6 cars. The five-speed is the Mazda-designed FNR5 behind the 2.3L. Listings often mix them up, which is why we match from the VIN.

My 2013–2016 Fusion rolled with the lever in Park. Is the transmission faulty?

Probably not. That is the shifter-cable bushing fault, which Ford recalled three times between 2018 and 2022. Have the recall done before considering a replacement.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
