Engine Options

Which engine does your Fusion have?

The Fusion had two generations. The 2006–2012 car used Mazda-derived Duratec engines — 2.3L and 2.5L four-cylinders, 3.0L and 3.5L V6s — plus a 2.5L Atkinson-cycle engine in the Hybrid. The 2013–2020 car kept the 2.5L as its base engine and added turbocharged EcoBoost engines of 1.6L, 1.5L, 2.0L and 2.7L, with a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle engine in the Hybrid and plug-in Energi.

The table below lists what was offered when. The 2.0L EcoBoost was redesigned for 2017 and the 1.5L and 1.6L are different engines despite the similar names, so we confirm the exact one from your VIN.

2006–2009First generation (CD3)
2.3L Duratec I4S, SE and SEL.
3.0L Duratec V6All years; all-wheel drive from 2007.
2010–2012First generation, 2010 facelift
2.5L Duratec I4Replaced the 2.3L.
3.0L Duratec V6Revised flex-fuel version.
3.5L Duratec V6Fusion Sport.
2.5L Atkinson hybrid I4Fusion Hybrid, with a nickel-metal-hydride battery.
2013–2020Second generation (CD4)
2.5L Duratec I4Base engine on the S; the only engine on the 2020 S.
1.6L EcoBoost I42013–2014. The only engine offered with a manual.
1.5L EcoBoost I42014–2020; standard on SE and above from 2019.
2.0L EcoBoost I4Front- or all-wheel drive. First-generation engine 2013–2016; twin-scroll redesign 2017–2020.
2.7L EcoBoost V6Fusion Sport, 2017–2019, all-wheel drive.
2.0L Atkinson hybrid I4Hybrid and Energi plug-in, 2013–2020.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which 2.0L EcoBoost

The 2013–2016 engine and the 2017–2020 twin-scroll engine are different designs. Match the model year, not just the size.

1.5L or 1.6L

The 1.6L EcoBoost of 2013–2014 and the 1.5L EcoBoost of 2014–2020 overlap in 2014 and are not the same engine. The VIN tells us which you have.

Hybrid or gasoline

The Hybrid and Energi use Atkinson-cycle engines of their own — 2.5L in 2010–2012 and 2.0L from 2013 — that do not interchange with the gasoline 2.5L or the 2.0L EcoBoost.

Front- or all-wheel drive

The 2.0L EcoBoost came in front- and all-wheel-drive cars, the 2.7L Sport was all-wheel drive only, and the 2007–2009 V6 was also offered with all-wheel drive. Tell us which your car has.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and drivetrain before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Fusion engine problems

Overheating and cracked heads — 1.6L EcoBoost, 2013–2014

Low coolant lets the cylinder head overheat and crack, and oil leaking onto hot parts has caused fires. Ford’s 2017 recall (17V209) adds a coolant-level sensor rather than a new head, so any 1.6L that has overheated may already have a cracked head. Check by VIN that this recall and the earlier 2012 one were done.

Coolant intrusion — 1.5L EcoBoost, 2017–2019

Coolant seeps into the cylinders, bringing coolant loss, misfires, white smoke and overheating, and the repair is a new short block. Ford has run customer programs for short-block replacement on these engines, so ask a Ford dealer by VIN whether the work was done or is still covered before paying for an engine.

Coolant intrusion — 2.0L EcoBoost, 2017–2019

The twin-scroll 2.0L shares the weakness of the 1.5L and of the same engine in the Edge: coolant in the cylinders, misfires and overheating. No recall or customer program covers it, so a replacement engine is the usual outcome.

Hybrid control faults — 2010–2012 Hybrid and 2019–2020 Energi

The 2010–2012 Hybrid can lose electric running; Ford’s 2019 bulletin and 2022 customer program fix it with free battery- and powertrain-control software. The 2019–2020 Energi was recalled (23V440) for a battery energy control module that can be damaged and cause a loss of power. Neither is an engine fault.

FAQ

Fusion engine questions, answered

Which engine does my Fusion have?

A 2.3L four or 3.0L V6 in 2006–2009; a 2.5L four, 3.0L or 3.5L V6 or the 2.5L hybrid in 2010–2012; and from 2013 a 2.5L, a 1.6L, 1.5L, 2.0L or 2.7L EcoBoost, or the 2.0L hybrid. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My 2017–2019 Fusion loses coolant and misfires. Is that covered?

On the 1.5L EcoBoost, Ford has run customer programs that replace the short block after coolant intrusion, so have a dealer check the VIN before paying for an engine. On the 2.0L EcoBoost there is no program, and a replacement engine is the usual fix.

Do you supply engines for the Fusion Hybrid and Energi?

Yes. The 2010–2012 Hybrid has a 2.5L Atkinson-cycle engine and the 2013–2020 Hybrid and Energi a 2.0L; neither is the gasoline engine of the same size, so tell us which you have.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
