Engine Options
Which engine does your Expedition have?
The Expedition has had two engine families in its life: the Triton V8s — the 4.6L and 5.4L in 2-valve form through 2004, then the 3-valve 5.4L through 2014 — and the 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6, which arrived for 2015 and was redesigned for 2018.
The table below lists what was offered when. Because a 5.4L can be either a 2-valve or a 3-valve, and a 3.5L EcoBoost either the first or second generation, we confirm the exact engine from your VIN.
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 4.6L Triton V8 (2V) | All years. |
| 5.4L Triton V8 (2V) | All years; iron block. Output raised for 1999. |
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 4.6L Triton V8 (2V) | 2003–2004; dropped for 2005. |
| 5.4L Triton V8 (2V) | 2003–2004. |
| 5.4L Triton V8 (3V) | 2005–2006, with variable cam timing. Standard from 2005. |
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 5.4L Triton V8 (3V) | 2007–2014. Flex-fuel from 2009, with a small output increase. |
| 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (first generation) | 2015–2017. |
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (second generation) | Dual primary chains, redesigned cam phasers, port and direct injection. Platinum trucks are rated higher. |
| 3.5L EcoBoost High Output V6 | 2022–2024, Timberline and the Limited Stealth Performance Package. |
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (second generation) | Standard. |
| 3.5L EcoBoost High Output V6 | Standard on the Tremor, optional on the Platinum. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
2-valve or 3-valve 5.4L
The 2-valve 5.4L ran through 2004 and the 3-valve from 2005 to 2014. They have different heads and electronics and do not interchange.
4.6L or 5.4L
Both V8s were offered from 1997 to 2004, and the 4.6L was dropped for 2005. The VIN tells us which your Expedition has.
First- or second-generation EcoBoost
The 3.5L EcoBoost was redesigned for 2018 with twin primary chains, new cam phasers and added port injection, and the name stayed the same. The model year matters as much as the engine size.
High Output trucks
From 2022 some trims carry the High Output 3.5L EcoBoost. Tell us your trim so we quote the right version.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Expedition engine problems
Spark plug blowout — 4.6L and 5.4L 2-valve, 1997–2004
The plug threads in the aluminum heads strip and a plug can be ejected. Ford bulletin 07-21-2 sets out the repair: a new head under warranty, or a thread insert once the warranty has ended. Ford does not attribute it to neglect.
Spark plugs and timing — 5.4L 3-valve, 2005–2014
On engines built before October 2007 the two-piece spark plugs seize and snap off on removal; Ford bulletin 08-7-6 covers the special tools. Cam-phaser rattle and timing-chain tensioner failure are widely reported as the usual reasons these engines end up replaced.
Cam phasers — 3.5L EcoBoost, 2017–2020
The variable cam timing phasers tap and rattle and then fail. Ford issued several bulletins and Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03, which extended coverage for replacing them with a redesigned part. Ask a dealer whether the work was done on your truck.
Fuel pump and fire recalls — 2018–2022
Recall 18V392 covers 2018 trucks whose high-pressure fuel pump welds can crack and leak, recall 22V346 covers 2021 trucks for an engine-compartment fire risk from the battery junction box, and recall 25V455 updates the engine computer on 2022 trucks for the low-pressure fuel pump. All are free at a dealer.

FAQ
Expedition engine questions, answered
Which 5.4L does my Expedition have?
A 2-valve engine if it is a 1997–2004 truck, and a 3-valve engine with variable cam timing if it is a 2005–2014. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
My 3.5L EcoBoost rattles on start-up. Do I need a new engine?
Not necessarily. On 2017–2020 engines the rattle is usually the cam phasers, which Ford replaced with a redesigned part under Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03. Ask a dealer whether that was done before deciding on an engine.
Did Ford recall the 2-valve engines for spark plug blowout?
No. There is no engine recall for the plug threads; bulletin 07-21-2 describes the repair instead. The recalls on 1997–2004 trucks (05V017 and 05V388) are for the speed-control deactivation switch, a fire risk, not the engine.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
