Engine Options

Which engine does your F-250 and F-350 Super Duty have?

The F-250 and F-350 have shared the same engines in every generation: the Triton V8 and V10 with the 7.3L, 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke diesels through 2010, the 6.2L V8 and 6.7L Power Stroke from 2011, the 7.3L Godzilla V8 from 2020, and the 6.8L Godzilla and 6.7L High Output since 2023.

The table below lists what was offered when. The same engine name can hide two different versions — the 2-valve and 3-valve Tritons, the early and revised 6.0L, the 6.7L at four different outputs — so we confirm the exact one from your VIN.

1999–2007First generation
5.4L Triton V8 (2V)1999–2004.
5.4L Triton V8 (3V)2005–2007, with variable cam timing.
6.8L Triton V10 (2V)1999–2004.
6.8L Triton V10 (3V)2005–2007.
7.3L Power Stroke V8Diesel, 1999 to mid-2003.
6.0L Power Stroke V8Diesel, introduced as a running change in 2003 and sold through 2007. Cylinder heads redesigned for 2005–2006.
2008–2010Second generation
5.4L Triton V8 (3V)
6.8L Triton V10 (3V)2010 was its last year in the F-250 and F-350.
6.4L Power Stroke V8Diesel, 2008–2010 only. Sequential twin turbos and the first Power Stroke with a particulate filter.
2011–2016Third generation
6.2L V8Replaced both the 5.4L and the V10. Rated lower in F-350s over 10,000 lb GVWR.
6.7L Power Stroke V8Ford’s own diesel from 2011; output raised for 2015. Chassis cabs are rated lower.
2017–2022Fourth generation
6.2L V8Production ended in December 2022.
7.3L Godzilla V82020–2022. Pushrod V8 that replaced the V10.
6.7L Power Stroke V8Output raised again for 2018 and for 2020.
2023–presentFifth generation
6.8L Godzilla V8Standard engine, pickups only. Flex-fuel from 2024.
7.3L Godzilla V8
6.7L Power Stroke V8
6.7L Power Stroke High Output V8Pickups only, available on every trim.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

F-250 or F-350

The two trucks share engines, so this page covers both. The quote form lists them separately and opens on the F-250; if yours is an F-350, choose F-350 in the form. Tell us too if it is a chassis cab, which gets a lower-rated version of the same engine.

2-valve or 3-valve

The 5.4L and 6.8L were built in 2-valve form through 2004 and 3-valve form from 2005. Heads, intakes and engine computers differ, and the two do not interchange.

Which Power Stroke

Four diesels in four eras: the 7.3L to mid-2003, the 6.0L from 2003 to 2007, the 6.4L in 2008–2010 and the 6.7L since 2011. A 2003 truck can have either the 7.3L or the 6.0L.

Which 6.7L

The 6.7L Power Stroke was uprated for 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2020, and the High Output version arrived for 2023. We match by model year, not just by size.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and cab before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common F-250 and F-350 Super Duty engine problems

Spark plugs — 5.4L and 6.8L Triton, 1999–2008

On 2-valve engines the plug threads in the aluminum heads can strip and a plug can blow out; Ford bulletin 07-21-2 allows a thread insert repair out of warranty. On 3-valve engines built before October 2007, the two-piece plugs seize and break off on removal, covered by bulletin 08-7-6.

Head gaskets, EGR cooler and oil cooler — 6.0L Power Stroke, 2003–2007

The stretch-to-yield head bolts let the head gaskets fail, and the EGR cooler and in-block oil cooler clog or rupture; injectors, the high-pressure oil pump and the injector control module also fail. Ford settled the class actions in 2013 (the settlement is now closed), and an owner who opted out won a verdict for fraudulent concealment in 2017 that was upheld on appeal in 2020. Recall 05V270 covers stalling from the injector-module harness.

Pistons and particulate filter — 6.4L Power Stroke, 2008–2010

Heat from filter regeneration is linked to piston and ring failure in cylinders 7 and 8, and a failed EGR cooler can fill cylinder 8 with coolant. Recall 07V139 reflashed the engine computer because excess fuel could overheat the filter and cause smoke or flame from the tailpipe.

Turbo bearings and fuel pumps — 6.7L Power Stroke, 2011 on

The 2011–2012 turbo’s ceramic ball bearings fail; later turbos use steel. High-pressure fuel pump failure that spreads metal through the fuel system is widely reported. Recall 24V957 (redone as 26V158) updates the software on 2020–2022 trucks because biodiesel deposits can make the high-pressure pump fail, and recall 25V455 replaces the low-pressure fuel pump on 2021–2023 trucks.

FAQ

F-250 and F-350 Super Duty engine questions, answered

Which diesel does my Super Duty have?

By year: the 7.3L Power Stroke to mid-2003, the 6.0L from 2003 to 2007, the 6.4L in 2008–2010 and the 6.7L from 2011, with a High Output 6.7L from 2023. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Will a 5.4L or V10 from another year fit?

Only if it is the same version. The 2-valve engines (1999–2004) and the 3-valve engines (2005 on) have different heads, intakes and electronics. Match the model year and send us your VIN.

My 6.7L lost power. Is that a recall?

It may be. Recall 24V957 covers 2020–2022 trucks for high-pressure pump damage from biodiesel, and recall 25V455 replaces the low-pressure fuel pump on 2021–2023 trucks because it can fail and stall the engine. Have a dealer check by VIN before paying for an engine.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
