Engine Options
Which engine does your Escape have?
The Escape went through four generations and more than a dozen engines, from the 3.0L V6 of the early years to the three-cylinder turbo of the last ones. Two of those engines share the “1.5L EcoBoost” name and are completely different: a four-cylinder in 2017–2019 and a three-cylinder from 2020.
The table below lists what was offered when. The eighth character of the VIN identifies the engine, and we match it to the model year.
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 2.0L Zetec four-cylinder | 2001–2004, manual transmission only. |
| 2.3L Duratec four-cylinder | 2005–2008. |
| 3.0L Duratec V6 | 2001–2008. |
| 2.3L hybrid | Escape Hybrid, 2005–2008. |
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 2.3L Duratec four-cylinder | 2008 only. |
| 2.5L Duratec four-cylinder | 2009–2012. |
| 3.0L Duratec V6 | Updated with variable cam timing for 2009. |
| 2.5L hybrid | Escape Hybrid, 2009–2012. |
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 2.5L four-cylinder | |
| 1.6L EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder | 2013–2016. |
| 2.0L EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder | Redesigned twin-scroll version from 2017. |
| 1.5L EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder | 2017–2019. Not the three-cylinder of later cars. |
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 1.5L EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder | Base engine. |
| 2.0L EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder | All-wheel-drive models; redesigned block. |
| 2.5L hybrid | Hybrid, and plug-in hybrid from 2021. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Which 1.5L
The 2017–2019 1.5L EcoBoost is a four-cylinder; the 2020-on 1.5L is a three-cylinder. They share a name and nothing else.
Which 2.0L EcoBoost
The 2.0L was redesigned for 2017 and again for 2020. Match the model year, not just the size.
Hybrid or gasoline
Hybrid Escapes use their own engines in every generation — 2.3L, then 2.5L — and they do not interchange with the gasoline versions.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and drivetrain before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Escape engine problems
Overheating and fires — 2013–2014 1.6L EcoBoost
Coolant loss can crack the cylinder head and leak oil onto hot parts. Ford issued a string of recalls, the last in 2017 adding a coolant-level sensor. Check by VIN that all of them were done.
Coolant intrusion — 2017–2019 2.0L and 1.5L EcoBoost
Coolant seeps into the cylinders, causing low coolant, white smoke, misfires and overheating. Ford’s bulletins call for a new engine block; a customer program covered the 1.5L four-cylinder, while the 2.0L has service bulletins and a class action.
Engine failure risk — 2020–2023 hybrids
A bearing failure can release oil and start a fire. Ford recalled these cars in 2022 and 2023, with engine replacement in some cases. Check by VIN.
Fuel injectors — 2020–2022 1.5L three-cylinder
Cracked injectors can leak fuel onto hot parts. The final recall remedy, new fuel rails and injectors, was expected in 2026.
Commonly reported — 2001–2012 3.0L V6
Timing-chain tensioner wear and overheating that leads to head-gasket failure are commonly reported by repair shops, though Ford issued no campaign for them.

FAQ
Escape engine questions, answered
My 2.0L EcoBoost has white smoke and keeps losing coolant. What is it?
On 2017–2019 cars that is the coolant-intrusion fault, and the fix Ford specifies is a new engine block. Have a dealer check for any program or bulletin that applies before paying for an engine.
Is the 1.5L in a 2019 Escape the same as in a 2020?
No. The 2019 engine is a four-cylinder and the 2020 engine is a three-cylinder. They are not interchangeable.
Do you have engines for the Escape Hybrid?
Yes. Tell us the model year, because the 2005–2008, 2009–2012 and 2020-on hybrids use different engines.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
