Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Rogue have?

Every Rogue sold in the US has had a CVT — a continuously variable transmission. Three Jatco units have been used: the JF011E family on the 2008–2015 original and Rogue Select, the CVT8 on the 2014–2020 second generation, and a newer wider-ratio CVT behind the 1.5L turbo from 2022.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the old and new models overlapped for 2014–2015 and the 2021 car has a one-year powertrain, we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Rogue, Rogue Select or Rogue Sport

The Rogue Select of 2014–2015 is the old 2008–2013 model sold alongside the new one, and the Rogue Sport of 2017–2022 is a smaller vehicle with its own CVT. Tell us which badge is on the tailgate.

Which CVT

The JF011E family of 2008–2015, the CVT8 of 2014–2020, the 2021 unit and the wider-ratio 2022-on unit are four different transmissions. The model year and engine tell us which you need.

Hybrid

The 2017–2019 Rogue Hybrid uses its own CVT8 Hybrid unit. It does not interchange with the standard CVT8.

Programming

A replacement CVT has to be programmed to the car’s control module. Check that your installer can do it before ordering.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Rogue transmission problems

Early CVT failures — 2008–2010

In 2009 Nissan extended CVT cover on all its 2003–2010 CVT models to 10 years or 120,000 miles, which took in the first three Rogue years. That cover has now expired.

Shudder, hesitation and failure — CVT8, 2014–2018

Shuddering and hesitation under acceleration, sometimes ending in a failed unit. A class action (Stringer v. Nissan, final approval March 2022) extended the warranty on the CVT assembly and control unit by 24 months or 24,000 miles, with reimbursement for past repairs and a voucher after two or more replacements. Claims closed in March 2022 and the extended cover has now run out for almost every car.

Stalling that is the engine, not the CVT — 1.5L turbo, 2022 on

A stall or no-restart on a 2022-on Rogue may be the throttle body gear covered by recall 26V081, and a loss of drive with metal in the oil is the bearing failure covered by recalls 25V437 and 26V080. Have any open recall done before suspecting the transmission.

FAQ

Rogue transmission questions, answered

Which CVT does my Rogue have?

The JF011E family on 2008–2013 Rogues and the 2014–2015 Rogue Select, the Jatco CVT8 (JF016E) on 2014–2020 Rogues, and a newer wider-ratio Jatco CVT behind the 1.5L turbo from 2022. The 2021 car has its own one-year pairing. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Is my 2014–2018 Rogue CVT covered by the class settlement?

The Stringer settlement extended the CVT warranty by 24 months or 24,000 miles on 2014–2018 Rogues, 2015–2018 Pathfinders and QX60s. Claims closed in March 2022 and most cars are now past the extended term; disputes over the cover go to BBB Auto Line arbitration. If yours is still within it, ask a Nissan dealer before buying a replacement.

Will a Pathfinder or Altima CVT fit my Rogue?

The 2014–2020 Rogue’s CVT8 is the same Jatco family used in the 2013–2020 Pathfinder, but each application has its own version and calibration. Send us your VIN and we will tell you what interchanges.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
