Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Pathfinder have?

The 1987–1995 WD21 and 1996–2004 R50 offered a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Every Pathfinder since has been automatic: the RE5R05A five-speed in the 2005–2012 R51, a Jatco CVT in every 2013–2020 R52, and a ZF nine-speed in the 2022-on R53.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Two- and four-wheel-drive units differ on the older generations, and the 2005–2010 automatic depends on its radiator, so we confirm the details from your VIN before quoting.

1987–1995WD21
Five-speed manualAll years, behind the 3.0L V6 and, for 1987–1989, the 2.4L four.
Four-speed automatic3.0L V6 only; the electronically controlled RE4R01A from 1990.
1996–2004R50
Four-speed automaticCode: RE4R01AAll years, behind the 3.3L and then the 3.5L V6.
Five-speed manualOffered with both the 3.3L and the 3.5L V6.
2005–2012R51
Five-speed automaticCode: RE5R05AAll years, behind the 4.0L V6 and the 5.6L V8. The R51 had no manual in the US.
2013–2020R52

Before You Order

What to check before you order

New radiator with a 2005–2010 automatic

The cooler built into the original radiator on these years can crack and push coolant into the transmission fluid. Fit a new radiator, or bypass its internal cooler with an external one, when the transmission goes in, or the replacement can be ruined the same way.

Match the engine

On the WD21 the automatic came only with the 3.0L V6, and the 1987–1989 2.4L four was manual-only. The R50’s automatic was paired with the 3.3L and then the 3.5L, and the R51’s sits behind either the 4.0L or the 5.6L V8. Tell us the engine along with the model year.

Two- or four-wheel drive

On 1987–2012 Pathfinders, a four-wheel-drive transmission has a transfer case bolted to its back, and its rear housing and output shaft differ from a two-wheel-drive unit’s. Tell us which drive yours has.

CVT or nine-speed

Every 2013–2020 Pathfinder has a CVT; every 2022-on Pathfinder has a ZF nine-speed. The nine-speed is not the Jatco JR913E in the Frontier and Titan, which is a rear-drive unit. There was no 2021 model year.

Hybrid or V6

The Pathfinder Hybrid, introduced for 2014, uses the CVT8 Hybrid, a different unit from the V6’s CVT. Tell us if yours is a hybrid.

Send the VIN

A Pathfinder’s VIN tells us its transmission, engine, drive and model year, so the unit we quote is the one that fits.

Common Problems

Common Pathfinder transmission problems

Radiator coolant in the RE5R05A — 2005–2010

The transmission cooler inside the radiator cracks, and coolant mixes into the RE5R05A’s fluid, turning it pink and milky. The clutches suffer: harsh or delayed shifts and shudder come first, then slipping and loss of drive.

CVT judder — 2013–2014

A judder or vibration on light acceleration from low speed is the usual complaint on the first R52s. Nissan released a software update for it, so check whether yours has had it before replacing the CVT.

CVT shudder and hesitation — 2015–2018

Shudder, hesitation and jerky acceleration that get worse over time, until the CVT slips or stops pulling.

FAQ

Pathfinder transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Pathfinder have?

A five-speed manual or, with the V6, a four-speed automatic for 1987–1995; a five-speed manual or the RE4R01A four-speed automatic for 1996–2004; the RE5R05A five-speed automatic for 2005–2012; a Jatco CVT for 2013–2020; and the ZF nine-speed from 2022. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Can I just replace the transmission on my 2005–2010 Pathfinder?

Only if the radiator is replaced or its internal cooler bypassed at the same time. If coolant reached the old transmission’s fluid, the original radiator will do the same to the new one.

Is the 2022 Pathfinder’s nine-speed the same as the Frontier’s?

No. The Pathfinder and QX60 use a ZF 9HP built for front-drive-based vehicles; the Frontier and Titan use the Jatco JR913E, a rear-drive unit. They do not interchange.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
