Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Altima have?

Every automatic Altima since 2007 has a CVT — a continuously variable transmission — and from 2013 there has been no other choice. Before that the automatic was a four-speed, joined by a five-speed for the V6 in 2005–2006, and a manual was offered alongside it.

The four-cylinder and V6 cars used different CVTs, and the units were redesigned for 2013. Nissan also builds each one in several versions, so matching by model year and engine is essential. The table below shows what was fitted when.

1993–1997First generation (U13)

Before You Order

What to check before you order

1993–2001 cars

All of them have the 2.4L engine and either the RE4F04A four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. Nissan shortened the gearing and final drive of both transmissions for the 2000 model year, so a 1998–1999 unit and a 2000–2001 unit are not the same.

2.5L or V6

In 2002–2004 both engines used the RE4F04B four-speed automatic. For 2005–2006 the V6 moved to the RE5F22A five-speed, and from 2007 to 2018 each engine had its own CVT. Tell us the engine as well as the year.

Match the exact version

Nissan builds the same transmission in versions with different gearing for different engines and years, each with its own model code on the unit. We match that code, not just the transmission name.

Programming is required

On 2013-on cars, fitting a replacement CVT means programming the control module with the new unit’s calibration data, using Nissan’s scan tool. Check that your installer can do it.

Hybrid

The 2007–2011 Altima Hybrid has a transaxle of its own, with two motor-generators inside. It is not a belt CVT and does not interchange with one.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Altima transmission problems

Harsh shifting — 2005–2006 V6 five-speed

The RE5F22A five-speed automatic is known for hard, jerky gear changes, and an affected unit can go on to slip and fail.

Whine, slipping and overheating — 2007–2012 CVT

The first-generation CVT can develop a whine, shudder or slip, and when it overheats it drops into a reduced-power fail-safe mode.

Judder and hesitation — 2013–2018

A judder or shudder under light acceleration, hesitation and loss of power. Nissan’s repairs ran from a software update to a new valve body or a complete CVT.

FAQ

Altima transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Altima have?

A four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual from 1993 to 2001; a four-speed automatic, a five-speed automatic or a manual from 2002 to 2006; and a CVT on every automatic from 2007. The CVT differed between the 2.5L and the V6 and was redesigned for 2013.

Should I buy a used or a remanufactured CVT?

Either can be right. For the years with known faults, ask us about a remanufactured unit as well as a used one, and about the mileage of any used unit we offer.

Can I swap the CVT for a conventional automatic?

No. The car’s electronics are built around the CVT. Replace it with the same type and version.

Do you supply manual transmissions for the Altima?

Yes, for the years they were offered: 1993–2001 cars, 2002–2006 sedans, 2007–2010 sedans and 2008–2012 coupes.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
