Engine Options

Which engine does your Altima have?

Every Altima from 1993 to 2001 has the same engine, the 2.4L KA24DE four-cylinder. Since 2002 most have had one of two: the 2.5L four-cylinder or the 3.5L V6. That sounds simple, but the 2.5L QR25DE was revised for 2007 and again for 2013, and the direct-injected PR25DD that took over for 2019 is a different engine, so the model year decides which one fits.

The V6 ended with the 2018 model year and was replaced by the 2.0L VC-Turbo, which ran until 2024. The table below lists what was offered in each generation.

1993–1997First generation (U13)
2.4L four-cylinderCode: KA24DEThe only engine. Twin-cam, 16 valves, timing chain.
1998–2001Second generation (L30)
2.4L four-cylinderCode: KA24DEThe only engine. Output was raised for the 2000 model year.
2002–2006Third generation (L31)
2.5L four-cylinderCode: QR25DEThe early version; it differs from the 2007-on QR25DE.
3.5L V6Code: VQ35DEIncluding the 2005–2006 SE-R.
2007–2012Fourth generation (L32); coupe 2008–2013
2.5L four-cylinderCode: QR25DERevised for 2007.
3.5L V6Code: VQ35DE
2.5L hybridCode: QR25DEAltima Hybrid, 2007–2011. Sold in a limited number of states.
2013–2018Fifth generation (L33)
2.5L four-cylinderCode: QR25DERevised again for 2013.
3.5L V6Code: VQ35DE2018 was the last year for a V6 Altima.
2019–presentSixth generation (L34)
2.5L four-cylinder, direct injectionCode: PR25DDAll-wheel drive optional. Not the same engine as the earlier QR25DE.
2.0L VC-Turbo four-cylinderCode: KR20DDET2019–2024, front-wheel drive only.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

1993–2001: the 2.4L KA24DE

Cars of these years have the KA24DE, which belongs to a different engine family from the 2.5L engines that replaced it. Neither fits in place of the other, so tell us the model year first.

Which 2.5L

The QR25DE was revised for 2007 and again for 2013, and the 2019-on PR25DD is a different engine altogether. The model year tells us which version you need.

Sedan, coupe or hybrid

The coupe (2008–2013) stayed on the fourth-generation design for 2013, a year after the sedan changed, so a 2013 coupe does not take the sedan’s 2013 engine. And the 2007–2011 Hybrid has its own version of the 2.5L. Tell us the body style, and whether the car is a hybrid.

All-wheel drive

From 2019 the 2.5L can be had with all-wheel drive. The 2.0L VC-Turbo is front-wheel drive only.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body style before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Altima engine problems

Pre-catalyst failure — 2002–2003 2.5L

The pre-catalytic converter can overheat and break up, and the debris drawn into the cylinders scores the walls — leading to heavy oil consumption and engine failure.

Stalling from sensor faults — 2002–2006 2.5L

A faulty crankshaft or camshaft position sensor can make the 2.5L cut out while driving or refuse to start, which looks like a dead engine. Rule the sensors out with a scan before you buy an engine.

FAQ

Altima engine questions, answered

Will a 2.5L from a different year fit my Altima?

Not necessarily. The QR25DE was revised for 2007 and again for 2013, and from 2019 the Altima has the PR25DD, a different engine. Send us your VIN and we will match the right version.

Can I use a QR25DE from a Rogue, Sentra or Frontier?

The QR25DE was used in those models too, but each has its own set-up, and the Frontier’s engine sits lengthwise rather than across the car. Send us your VIN and we will tell you what interchanges.

Can I put a KA24DE from a 240SX or Frontier in my 1993–2001 Altima?

Not as a complete engine. The 240SX, Frontier and Xterra mount the KA24DE lengthwise for rear- or four-wheel drive, while the Altima mounts it crosswise to drive the front wheels, so the engines are dressed differently. We match the engine to an Altima.

Do you supply engines for the Altima Hybrid?

Yes. The 2007–2011 Altima Hybrid uses its own version of the 2.5L, so tell us the model year and that the car is a hybrid.

Does the Altima still have a V6?

No. The 3.5L V6 ended with the 2018 model year. The 2.0L VC-Turbo replaced it from 2019 to 2024, and from 2025 the 2.5L is the only engine.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
