Finding the right Nissan engine
Nissan gets a lot of use out of each engine. The 2.5L QR25DE powered the Altima, Rogue, Sentra SE-R and Frontier, and the 3.5L VQ35DE went into the Altima, Maxima, Murano, Quest and Pathfinder.
The same code does not always mean the same engine, though. The QR25DE was revised for 2007, the engine in a rear-wheel-drive truck is set up differently from the one in a front-wheel-drive car, and newer engines such as the PR25DD share little with the ones they replaced. Engine Families
The engines behind most Nissan vehicles
QR25DE — 2.5L four-cylinder
The Altima (2002–2018), Rogue (2008–2020), Sentra SE-R and Frontier (2005–2019). It was revised for 2007, so earlier and later engines differ.
MR family — 1.6L to 2.0L four-cylinders
The 2.0L MR20DE in the 2007–2012 Sentra, the 1.8L in the Versa and the 2013–2019 Sentra, and the 1.6L turbo in the Juke.
VQ V6 — 3.5L and 4.0L
The 3.5L VQ35DE in the Altima, Maxima, Murano, Quest and Pathfinder, and the 4.0L VQ40DE in the Frontier, Xterra and 2005–2012 Pathfinder.
VK V8 — 5.6L
The VK56DE in the Titan and Armada from 2004 to 2015, and the direct-injected VK56VD from 2017.
PR25DD and VC-Turbo
The direct-injected 2.5L PR25DD in the Altima from 2019, and the variable-compression turbo engines: the 2.0L in the 2019–2024 Altima and the 1.5L three-cylinder in the Rogue.
Twin-turbo V6 — VR
The 3.8L in the GT-R, the 3.0L in the Nissan Z and the 3.5L in the Armada from 2025.

How do I find out which engine my Nissan has?

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Is the 2.5L in a Frontier the same as the one in an Altima?
They are the same engine family, but the Frontier’s is set up for a rear-wheel-drive truck. We match the engine to the vehicle it is going into.
