Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Sentra have?

Every automatic Sentra since 2007 has been an Xtronic CVT — a continuously variable transmission — and from 2020 there is no other choice in the US. Before that, Sentras used three-speed automatics from 1982 to 1990 and four-speed automatics from 1991 to 2006, and manuals were offered on every generation until 2019, from the four-speeds of the 1980s to the six-speed with a helical limited-slip differential in the 2002–2006 SE-R Spec V.

The CVT has changed with the generations: Jatco’s JF011E in 2007–2012, the smaller JF015E in 2013–2019 and the CVT8 from 2020, carried over into the 2026 redesign. Older cars have to be matched by engine and drive as well, since the 1.6L and 2.0L cars of the 1990s used different units and the 1987–1989 wagon was also built with four-wheel drive. The table below shows what was fitted when, and we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

The 1.6L and 2.0L cars of 1991–1999 had different transmissions, as did the 2000–2006 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.5L cars, and in 2007–2012 the SE-R was CVT only while the Spec V was manual only. Tell us the engine and trim as well as the year.

Four-wheel-drive wagon

For 1987–1989 the Sentra wagon was also offered with four-wheel drive. Its transmission is not the same as the front-drive unit, so tell us which drive your car has.

Which CVT

The 2007–2012 cars use the JF011E, the 2013–2019 1.8L cars the smaller JF015E and the 2020-on cars the CVT8. These do not interchange, so the model year matters.

Manuals

Five-speed manuals were offered until 2006, and the 1991–1994 SE-R’s has a viscous limited-slip differential. Six-speeds came with the 2002–2006 Spec V, the 2007–2012 2.0L and Spec V, the 2013–2019 base S, the 2017 SR Turbo and the 2017–2019 NISMO. No 2020-on Sentra was sold with a manual in the US.

Programming

From 2013, the CVT control module must be programmed with the calibration data of the replacement unit. Make sure your installer has the equipment for it.

Have your VIN ready

Sentra transmissions changed with engine, trim and drive as well as model year. Your VIN pins all of that down, so the unit we quote is the one your car was built with.

Common Problems

Common Sentra transmission problems

Whine, judder and overheating — JF011E, 2007–2012

The first Sentra CVT can whine, slip or judder, and overheat into a reduced-power mode, and it can fail outright. Nissan extended the CVT warranty on 2007–2010 cars to 10 years or 120,000 miles; that cover has now run out.

Shudder, jerking and hesitation — JF015E, 2013–2019

The smaller CVT fitted with the 1.8L can shudder and jerk when pulling away, hesitate under acceleration and overheat into a reduced-power mode, and it can fail outright.

FAQ

Sentra transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Sentra have?

A three-speed automatic or a four- or five-speed manual for 1982–1990; a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual for 1991–2006, plus the Spec V’s six-speed manual for 2002–2006; a CVT or a six-speed manual for 2007–2019, the CVT being the JF011E to 2012 and the JF015E with the 1.8L for 2013–2019; and a CVT only from 2020. A VIN settles it.

Do the SE-R and Spec V have special gearboxes?

Yes. The 1991–1994 SE-R’s five-speed manual has a viscous limited-slip differential. The 2002–2006 SE-R Spec V has the RS6F51H six-speed with a helical limited-slip differential. The 2007–2012 Spec V was manual only, with a six-speed.

Is the 4WD wagon’s transmission the same as a front-drive Sentra’s?

No. The 1987–1989 four-wheel-drive wagon has its own transmission, which also drives the rear wheels, and a front-drive unit cannot replace it. Tell us the drive type along with the year.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
