Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Frontier have?

The Frontier’s transmissions have followed its engines: a four-speed automatic and five-speed manuals in the 1998–2004 D22, the RE5R05A five-speed automatic and five- or six-speed manuals through the 2005–2019 D40, and from 2020 a single Jatco nine-speed automatic behind the 3.8L, with no manual offered.

The table below shows what was fitted when. On 2005–2010 automatics the radiator matters as much as the transmission, which is explained below.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Fix the radiator before you fit a 2005–2010 automatic

On these years the transmission cooler inside the radiator cracks and lets coolant into the automatic. A replacement unit fitted behind the original radiator is at risk of the same damage, so replace the radiator or bypass the in-radiator cooler before the new transmission goes in. Bypass kits are common.

Match the engine

The D22 and D40 paired a different gearbox with each engine: the four-cylinder and V6 manuals are different units, and an automatic is built for the engine in front of it. Tell us which engine your truck has.

2020 and 2021 are crossover years

These trucks kept the D40 body but have the 3.8L and the JR913E nine-speed. The five-speed from a 2019 truck is a different unit, and the VIN tells us which you have.

4x2 or 4x4

A 4x4 truck’s transmission works with a transfer case. Tell us whether yours is 4x2 or 4x4 so the right unit is quoted.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Frontier transmission problems

Coolant in the automatic — 2005–2010

A fatigue crack where the in-radiator cooler tube meets its port disk lets coolant into the transmission fluid. The clutches degrade: harsh or slow shifts and shudder first, then slipping and loss of drive, and the contaminated fluid can fault the control module and stall the truck. NHTSA logged about 2,500 complaints but declined to call it a safety defect. Nissan extended the radiator warranty to 8 years/80,000 miles in 2010, and a class settlement approved in October 2012 covered the radiator and a coolant-damaged transmission to 8 years/80,000 miles in full, with partial cover to 10 years/100,000 miles. All of that cover has now expired.

Rollaway recalls — 2020–2021

Nissan recalled the 2020–2021 trucks twice in 2022 (22V-457 and 22V-671) because the vehicle could roll away; the cause is reported to be in the transmission’s park function. Have any open recall done by VIN before suspecting the transmission itself.

JR913E nine-speed — 2020 on

We have not found a documented failure pattern for the nine-speed. The same JR913E is used in the 2020-on Titan, 2022-on Armada and 2023-on Z, and we still match it by vehicle and model year.

FAQ

Frontier transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Frontier have?

A four-speed automatic or five-speed manual for 1998–2004; the RE5R05A five-speed automatic behind the 4.0L, a five-speed automatic or manual behind the 2.5L, or a six-speed manual behind the 4.0L for 2005–2019; and the JR913E nine-speed from 2020. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Can I just replace the transmission on my 2005–2010 Frontier?

Not on its own. If coolant got into the fluid, the radiator’s internal cooler is the cause and it will contaminate the replacement too. Fit a new radiator or bypass the cooler at the same time.

Is the Frontier’s nine-speed the same as the Titan’s?

Both use the Jatco JR913E, as do the 2022-on Armada and 2023-on Z. The unit is still matched to the vehicle and model year, so send us your VIN.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
