Engine Options
Which engine does your Encore have?
Every Encore sold in the US has a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder, but there are two of them: the port-injected LUV the model launched with, and the direct-injected LE2 with stop/start that arrived on the Sport Touring for 2016 and became the only engine for 2021–2022.
The table below shows which engine was offered when. The two look alike and the same model year could have either, so we confirm from the VIN before we quote.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4L turbo four-cylinder, port injection | Code: LUV | All trims. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4L turbo four-cylinder, port injection | Code: LUV | The base engine, confirmed on non-Sport Touring trims through at least 2018. |
| 1.4L turbo four-cylinder, direct injection with stop/start | Code: LE2 | Introduced on the 2016 Sport Touring and offered on it through 2019. Which engine a 2020 Encore has is confirmed from the VIN. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4L turbo four-cylinder, direct injection with stop/start | Code: LE2 | Standard on every Encore. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
LUV or LE2
The two 1.4L turbos are not interchangeable. The LE2 has direct injection, a different cylinder head and fuel system and its own engine controller. The eighth character of the VIN tells them apart.
Mid-run changes
From 2016 to 2020 a car could have either engine depending on trim, and the 2020 line-up is not well documented. We go by VIN, not by trim name.
Not the Encore GX
The Encore GX, sold from 2020, is a separate model with 1.2L and 1.3L three-cylinder turbos. This page covers the original Encore only.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and trim before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Encore engine problems
PCV diaphragm in the cam cover — LUV, 2013–2018
The plastic cam cover carries the PCV diaphragm, and when it ruptures the engine whistles loudly, idles roughly and takes in unmetered air; oil is then pushed out past the seals. The cover is replaced as a unit. Reported on 2013–2018 cars with the LUV.
Intake-manifold PCV check valve — 1.4L turbo
A small check valve in the intake manifold fails or goes missing, crankcase pressure rises, and the rear main seal and other seals start to leak while oil consumption climbs. The valve is not serviceable on its own, so the manifold is replaced whole.
Oil starvation after PCV faults — 1.4L turbo
When the PCV faults go unnoticed the oil level falls and the turbo is starved first: coked oil feed lines, failed turbos and stretched timing chains are commonly reported. These are owner reports rather than a GM program, but they are why many Encores end up needing an engine.

FAQ
Encore engine questions, answered
Which 1.4L does my Encore have?
A 2013–2015 car has the LUV and a 2021–2022 car the LE2. In between it depends on the trim, with the LE2 on the Sport Touring from 2016. The eighth character of the VIN settles it, so send us the full VIN.
Can I fit an LE2 in a car built with the LUV?
No. They differ in injection, cylinder head, fuel system and engine controller, so a replacement has to carry the same RPO code as the engine that came out.
Is the Encore’s oil loss covered by a GM recall?
Not that we have found. The Encore’s recalls cover the steering, airbags, seat belts and, on 2019–2020 cars, a start/stop accumulator that can leak transmission fluid — none of them the engine itself. Check your VIN for open recalls anyway before you order.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
