Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Encore have?
The Encore kept one transmission for its whole run: GM’s Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic, fitted behind both versions of the 1.4L turbo in front- and all-wheel-drive cars. There was no manual and no CVT.
The table below shows what was fitted when. The unit still has to match the drive type, the engine and the model year, so we confirm from the VIN before we quote.
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6T40 six-speed automatic | Code: 6T40 | Front- and all-wheel drive, behind the LUV 1.4L turbo. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6T40 six-speed automatic | Code: 6T40 | Behind the LUV, and behind the LE2 with stop/start on the Sport Touring. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6T40 six-speed automatic | Code: 6T40 | Behind the LE2 with stop/start on every trim. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Front- or all-wheel drive
The Encore came both ways, and both used the 6T40. Tell us which yours is so we quote the matching unit.
Which engine is in front
The LUV and the LE2 both bolt to a 6T40, but cars with stop/start carry a transmission-fluid accumulator for that system and earlier cars do not. We match the engine and the model year, not just the gear count.
Not the Encore GX
The Encore GX, sold from 2020, is a separate model with a CVT behind its 1.2L and a CVT or nine-speed behind its 1.3L. This page covers the original Encore’s 6T40 only.
Programming after fitting
The 6T40 is electronically controlled, so a replacement has to be set up to the car once it is fitted. Allow for that in the job.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drive type and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Encore transmission problems
Shudder and harsh shifts — 6T40, 2013–2022
Some owners report shudder and harsh or erratic shifting. We have not found a GM special coverage or recall for the 6T40 in the Encore, so there is no factory program to fall back on once a unit has got noticeably worse.
Start/stop accumulator — 2019–2020
A late-2020 GM recall covers 2019–2020 cars whose start/stop accumulator end cap was built with bolts missing. Transmission fluid can leak out and the car can lose drive. Check by VIN for the open recall before buying a transmission for one of these.
Key removable with the car not in Park — 2013–2016
Recall 16V502 covers 2013–2016 Encores in which the key could be removed with the transmission not in Park, with a risk of the car rolling away. It is an ignition fix, not a transmission fault, but have it done.

FAQ
Encore transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Encore have?
The 6T40 six-speed automatic, whatever the year, trim or drive type. What changes is the engine in front of it and whether the car has stop/start, so we still ask for the VIN.
Is my Encore covered by GM’s six-speed special coverage?
No. Special Coverage 14404 for the 3-5-R wave plate applies to the 6T70 and 6T75 in larger GM vehicles such as the Enclave. The Encore’s 6T40 is a different transmission and is not part of it.
My 2019–2020 Encore leaked fluid and lost drive. Do I need a transmission?
Check the start/stop accumulator recall first: the dealer does that repair under the recall. What a transmission that has lost fluid needs depends on how far things went, so have it inspected before you order.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
