Engine Options
Which engine does your A4 have?
Five generations of A4 have been sold in the US. The engines have moved from the B5’s 2.8L V6 and 1.8T four, through the B6’s 1.8T and 3.0L V6 and the B7’s 2.0T FSI and 3.2L FSI, to a single 2.0T TFSI family — the EA888 — in three generations from 2009 to the final 2025 cars. The S4 has had its own engines throughout: a 2.7L twin-turbo V6, a 4.2L V8, a supercharged 3.0L and a turbocharged 3.0L.
The table below lists what was offered when. Audi identifies each engine by a three-letter code — AEB, AMB, CAEB — on the sticker in the spare-wheel well and in the service book, and the same size and year can hide two codes, so we confirm from the code and the VIN.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.8L 12-valve V6 | Code: AFC | 1996–1997, 172 hp. |
| 2.8L 30-valve V6 | Code: AHA / ATQ | AHA 1998–1999 (190 hp); ATQ 2000–2001. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Which 1.8T
The 1.8T went through four versions in the A4 — AEB, ATW and AWM in the B5 and AMB in the B6. Match the code on the sticker, not just the size and year.
FSI, TFSI and which generation
The B7’s 2.0T FSI is an EA113 engine; the 2.0T TFSI from 2009 is the EA888, built in three generations that are not interchangeable. The code tells us which you have.
2013 is a split year
For 2013, front-wheel-drive and manual cars kept the Gen 1 CAEB while quattro automatics got the Gen 2. Tell us the drive type and gearbox as well as the year.
Mild hybrid from 2020
The 2020–2025 cars carry a 12-volt mild-hybrid system, and the 40 TFSI and 45 TFSI are different outputs of it. They are not the same engines as the 2017–2019 cars.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN and the engine code we can confirm the engine, model year and drive type before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common A4 engine problems
Oil sludge — 1.8T, 1997–2004
Stretched oil changes let sludge build up in the 1.8T, and a sludged engine fails. In 2004 Audi extended engine cover for sludge to 8 years with unlimited miles, provided service records were produced, and a class action settled around 2010 reimbursed sludge repairs and replacement engines. That cover has long expired.
Cam follower wear — 2.0T FSI, 2005.5–2008
The follower between the high-pressure fuel pump and the intake camshaft wears through and then wears the cam lobe, bringing fuel-pressure codes P2293 and P0087 and poor running. Audi’s bulletin fits an intake cam with a harder lobe and a new follower, and a new pump only if its plunger is worn. The follower is a wear item, inspected around every 20,000 miles, and there was no warranty extension.
Oil consumption — 2.0T TFSI, 2009–2011
The EA888 Gen 1 uses oil. Audi’s bulletin first replaced the crankcase pressure-regulating valve and the front crankshaft seal, and later the pistons and rings. A class action, Asghari v. Volkswagen, was settled in 2015, so check whether the piston and ring repair was done before deciding on a replacement engine.
Timing-chain tensioner — 2.0T TFSI, 2009–2016
The tensioner on the Gen 1 and Gen 2 EA888 can fail and let the chain jump, bending valves. The Timing Chain settlement, approved in 2019, extended cover on 2009–2012 A4s to 10 years or 100,000 miles from the in-service date, with full reimbursement for dealer repairs, and a second settlement approved in 2024 covers the Gen 2 engines. Check whether your car qualifies before replacing the engine.

FAQ
A4 engine questions, answered
Which engine does my A4 have?
By generation: a 2.8L V6 or 1.8T to 2001, a 1.8T or 3.0L V6 for 2002–2005, a 2.0T FSI or 3.2L FSI for 2005.5–2008 and a 2.0T TFSI from 2009, with the S4 on its own engines. Within each, the version is set by the three-letter code on the sticker in the spare-wheel well and in the service book. The VIN alone does not give it, so send us both.
My 2013–2016 A4 was recalled for a coolant pump. Is the engine failing?
No. Recall 18V229 replaces the electric auxiliary coolant pump, which can overheat and catch fire, after an earlier software fix did not work. It is a dealer repair under the recall on 2013–2016 2.0T cars and is not a reason to replace the engine.
Will a 2.0T from an A5 or Q5 fit my A4?
The A5 and Q5 used the same EA888 family in the same years, but the generation and version still have to match — a Gen 1 CAEB is not a Gen 2, and the mild-hybrid engines from 2020 are different again. Send us your VIN and the donor’s code and we will confirm.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
