Transmission Options

Which transmission does your A4 have?

For most of its life the A4’s automatic has depended on its drive type. From 2002 to 2016 front-wheel-drive cars had the multitronic CVT while quattro cars had a ZF torque-converter Tiptronic — a five-speed, then six-speeds, then an eight-speed from 2011. From 2017 every A4 automatic is the DL382 seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch. Manuals were offered in every generation, and the S4 has always had its own units.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Audi puts the transmission code — 01J, 0BK and so on — on the sticker in the spare-wheel well and in the service book, and because one year can carry two or three different units we confirm from the code and the VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Drive type decides the unit

From 2002 to 2016 a front-wheel-drive A4 had the multitronic CVT and a quattro had the Tiptronic, and they share nothing. From 2017 both have the DL382 S tronic, but in different versions. Tell us which yours is.

Tiptronic, multitronic and S tronic are three things

Tiptronic is a ZF torque-converter automatic, multitronic a CVT and S tronic a dual-clutch gearbox. No A4 had an S tronic before 2017; the only earlier one in the range was the 0B5 in the 2010–2016 S4.

Which Tiptronic

The quattro automatics are four different ZF units — the 01V five-speed to 2005, the 09L six-speed for 2005.5–2008, the 0B6 six-speed for 2009–2010 and the 0BK eight-speed for 2011–2016 — and the 2010-to-2011 change falls mid-generation. Match the code.

S4 units are separate

The S4’s automatics — a six-speed Tiptronic in the B6 and B7, the 0B5 S tronic in the B8 and a ZF eight-speed in the B9 — were never fitted to the A4 of the same year.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN and the code from the sticker we can confirm the transmission, engine and drive type before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common A4 transmission problems

multitronic failure — 01J, 2002–2006 front-wheel drive

The 01J CVT in front-wheel-drive A4s failed often enough that a class action was filed in 2011 and settled in 2013, covering about 64,000 A4, A4 Cabriolet and A6 cars. The settlement dealt with the control module, the valve body and the whole transmission separately.

multitronic extended cover — 2002–2006

The settlement extended cover to 10 years or 100,000 miles on the control module (2003–2006 cars), the valve body (2003–2004) and the whole transmission (2002–2004, with proof of maintenance), and reimbursed earlier repairs on 2002–2004 cars. Claims closed in November 2013 and the 10-year terms have run out, so a multitronic that fails now is a replacement.

0AW multitronic — 2009–2016

The B8’s 0AW is a different, eight-step CVT and was not part of the 2013 settlement. Quattro A4s of the same years have the Tiptronic instead, so confirm the drive type before assuming a CVT fault.

FAQ

A4 transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my A4 have?

A front-wheel-drive automatic from 2002 to 2016 is a multitronic CVT (01J to 2008, 0AW from 2009); a quattro automatic is a Tiptronic (01V to 2005, 09L to 2008, 0B6 for 2009–2010, 0BK for 2011–2016); every automatic from 2017 is the DL382 S tronic. The code is on the sticker in the spare-wheel well and in the service book. Send it with your VIN and we will confirm.

Is my A4 automatic an S tronic?

Only if it is a 2017 or later car. Before that, A4 automatics were torque-converter Tiptronics or multitronic CVTs; the only earlier S tronic in the range was the 0B5 in the 2010–2016 S4.

Can I still claim under the multitronic settlement?

No. Claims closed in November 2013, and the extended cover ran 10 years or 100,000 miles from new, which every 2002–2006 car has now passed.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
