Audi Transmissions

Finding the right Audi transmission

Audi has used three kinds of automatic: Tiptronic, which is a ZF torque-converter automatic; multitronic, a CVT fitted to front-wheel-drive cars from 2002 to 2016; and S tronic, a dual-clutch gearbox. Manuals ran alongside them for most of that time.

Which one a car has depends on the model, the year and whether it is front-wheel drive or quattro, and the same model year often carried two. Each unit has a three-character code such as 0BK. Give us the code and your VIN and we’ll match the right one.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Audi vehicles

Tiptronic five- and six-speeds

ZF torque-converter automatics behind quattro cars: the 01V (ZF 5HP19) in the A4 to 2005, the 09L (ZF 6HP19 or 6HP26) in the 2005.5–2008 A4 and S4, and the 0B6 (ZF 6HP28) in the 2009–2010 A4.

Tiptronic eight-speeds

The 0BK (ZF 8HP55) in the 2011–2016 quattro A4, and the 0D5 version of the same ZF eight-speed in later Audis. The 2018–2024 S4 also uses a ZF eight-speed Tiptronic.

multitronic CVT

Front-wheel-drive cars only: the 01J in the A4 and A6 from 2002 to 2008, and the eight-step 0AW in the A4 from 2009 to 2016. The 2002–2006 01J was the subject of a class action settled in 2013.

S tronic dual-clutch

The 0B5 (DL501), a seven-speed wet-clutch unit in the 2009–2017 S4, S5, Q5 3.0T and A6; the DL382 seven-speed in the A4, A5 and Q5 from 2017; and the transverse DQ250 and DQ381 in the A3, TT and Q3.

Manuals

The 012, 01W, 01A, 01E and 01X five- and six-speeds in the B5 to B7 A4 and S4, and the 0A2, 0B2 and 0B4 six-speeds in later cars. The B9 A4 kept a six-speed manual on quattro cars from 2017.

FAQ

Used Audi transmission questions, answered

How do I find out which transmission my Audi has?

Audi gives each transmission a three-character code such as 01J or 0BK. It is on the sticker in the spare-wheel well and in the service book. The VIN alone does not give it, so send us the code and the VIN together and we will confirm the unit.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?

A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Is Tiptronic the same as S tronic?

No. Tiptronic is Audi’s name for a conventional torque-converter automatic built by ZF, S tronic is a dual-clutch gearbox and multitronic is a CVT. The three are built differently and are never interchangeable, so tell us which yours is or send the code.

Does a used Audi transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
