Jeep Engines
Finding the right Jeep engine
Jeep’s engines come from across Chrysler’s range, so the same engine family often turns up in a Wrangler, a Grand Cherokee and a Dodge or Ram truck. That widens the pool of good used engines for any one vehicle.
It also means a “3.6L” or “5.7L” is not one thing. The Pentastar was updated during its life and the Hemi revised in 2009, and the same engine is set up differently in different vehicles. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Jeep vehicles
4.0L straight-six
The AMC engine in the Cherokee XJ, the Grand Cherokee to 2004 and the Wrangler to 2006. Jeep’s best-known engine, and still in demand.
PowerTech 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8
The 3.7L in the Liberty, Grand Cherokee (2005–2010) and Commander; the 4.7L in the Grand Cherokee (1999–2009) and Commander.
Pentastar 3.6L V6
Jeep’s mainstay since 2011: Grand Cherokee from 2011, Wrangler from 2012, Gladiator from 2020.
Hemi 5.7L and 6.4L V8
The 5.7L in the Grand Cherokee (2005–2023), Commander and Wagoneer; the 6.4L in the Grand Cherokee SRT and the Wrangler Rubicon 392.
2.0L and 2.4L four-cylinders
The World Gas Engine in the 2007–2017 Compass and Patriot, and the 2.4L Tigershark in the Cherokee, Renegade and Compass.
2.0L turbo and EcoDiesel
The 2.0L turbo in the Wrangler, Cherokee, Compass and the 4xe hybrids, and the 3.0L EcoDiesel in the Grand Cherokee (2014–2019), Wrangler and Gladiator.

FAQ
Used Jeep engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Jeep has?
The eighth character of the VIN identifies the engine. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version, including the model-year changes that matter for fit.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Can I use a Hemi from a Ram in my Jeep?
The 5.7L Hemi was shared across Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Jeep, but each vehicle has its own version. We match the engine to the vehicle it is going into, so send us your VIN.
Does a used Jeep engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
