Engine Options

Which engine does your Grand Cherokee have?

Five generations of Grand Cherokee have been sold since 1993, and the engine line-up changed with each one: the AMC 4.0L straight-six and Chrysler’s 5.2L and 5.9L Magnum V8s in the ZJ, the 4.0L and the 4.7L PowerTech V8 in the WJ, the PowerTech V6 and V8, Hemi V8s and a Mercedes diesel in the WK, the Pentastar, Hemi V8s and EcoDiesel in the WK2, and the Pentastar, Hemi, 4xe plug-in hybrid and 2.0L Hurricane 4 turbo in the WL.

The table below lists what was offered when. The old WK2 body was sold alongside the new WL for 2022, so for a 2022 Grand Cherokee we check the VIN first.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Two 2022 Grand Cherokees

The old WK2 was sold as the “Grand Cherokee WK” for 2022 alongside the new WL. They are different vehicles, and the VIN tells us which you have.

Which 4.0L

The straight-six ran from 1993 to 2004 but did not stay the same: it moved to OBD-II engine management for 1996, and the 1999 WJ version has a redesigned intake manifold. Give us the model year, not just the size.

Which 4.7L

The 4.7L came in standard and High Output forms, and was revised again for 2008. Match the code, not just the size.

Which 3.6L

The Pentastar was updated during its production run, so we match by model year rather than treating every 3.6L as the same.

4xe is a hybrid

The 4xe pairs the 2.0L turbo with electric motors and a high-voltage battery. Tell us if your Jeep is a 4xe so we match the hybrid’s engine.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Grand Cherokee engine problems

Intake plenum leak — 1993–1998 5.2L and 5.9L

The underside of the Magnum’s intake manifold is closed off by a steel plate on a gasket. Once that gasket leaks, oil is sucked from the lifter valley into the cylinders, bringing blue smoke, oil-fouled plugs and heavy oil use that is easily blamed on worn rings.

Overheating damage — 1999–2009 4.7L

A neglected cooling system leads to head-gasket failure, cracked heads and dropped valve seats, and the engine sludges if oil changes are skipped.

Cylinder head wear — 2011–2013 3.6L

Valve guide and seat wear in the left cylinder head causes misfires.

Hemi tick — 5.7L and 6.4L with cylinder deactivation

Failed roller lifters wipe the camshaft lobes, causing ticking, misfires and loss of power, often ending in a replacement engine.

EGR cooler cracking — 3.0L EcoDiesel

The EGR cooler can crack and leak coolant into the intake, a fault that was recalled because of the fire risk. Have any open recall done and check for coolant loss before blaming the engine.

FAQ

Grand Cherokee engine questions, answered

Will a 5.7L from a Ram or Durango fit my Grand Cherokee?

The Hemi was shared across many Chrysler vehicles, but each has its own version and the engine was revised in 2009. Match the model year and send us your VIN so we can confirm.

Can a Magnum V8 from a Dodge truck go in my 1993–1998 Grand Cherokee?

The Dakota, Durango and Ram used the same 5.2L and 5.9L Magnum family, but sensors, accessories and engine management vary from one vehicle to another, and the Grand Cherokee’s own engines changed for 1996 with OBD-II. Give us your VIN and we will match the engine to your Jeep.

My 2011–2012 Grand Cherokee stalls. Is the engine failing?

Check the electrics first. These years were recalled for a fuel-pump relay in the power module (TIPM) that can cause stalling, which is easily mistaken for an engine fault.

Did the Grand Cherokee come with a diesel?

Yes, twice in the US: a 3.0L Mercedes diesel V6 in the 2007–2008 WK, and the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 in the WK2 from 2014.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
