Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Grand Cherokee have?
The only Grand Cherokees offered with a manual are 1993–1994 models with the 4.0L six, which could have the Aisin AX-15 five-speed. Every other one is an automatic, and the unit has followed the engine: the Aisin AW4 and Chrysler’s 42RE behind the six, Chrysler’s own four-, five- and six-speeds behind most of the V8s, a Mercedes five-speed behind the V6s, the SRT8s and the 2007–2008 diesel, and ZF-designed eight-speeds of several sizes since 2014.
The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the same year can have several different units, we confirm from your VIN.
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| AX-15 five-speed manual | 4.0L, 1993–1994. |
| AW4 four-speed automatic | 4.0L, 1993. |

| 46RH four-speed automatic | 5.2L V8, 1993–1995. |
| 44RE four-speed automatic | 5.2L V8, 1996–1998. |
| 46RE four-speed automatic | 5.9L V8, 1998. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 42RE four-speed automatic | 4.0L six. |
| 45RFE automatic | 4.7L V8 in the first WJs. |
| 545RFE five-speed automatic | 4.7L and 4.7L High Output, replacing the 45RFE. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| W5A580 five-speed automatic | 3.7L V6, 6.1L SRT8 and the 2007–2008 3.0L diesel. |
| 545RFE five-speed automatic | 4.7L and 5.7L Hemi. |

| 65RFE six-speed automatic | 5.7L, 2012–2013. |
| 845RE and 850RE eight-speed automatics | 3.6L from 2014; the 850RE replaced the 845RE in later years. |
| 8HP70 eight-speed automatic | 5.7L, 6.4L SRT and EcoDiesel, from 2014. |
| 8HP95 eight-speed automatic | Trackhawk, 2018–2021. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 850RE eight-speed automatic | 3.6L. |
| Eight-speed automatic | The 5.7L V8, the 4xe plug-in hybrid and, from 2026, the 2.0L Hurricane 4 each use their own version. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Match the engine
In most years the Grand Cherokee had two or three transmissions at once, one per engine. A unit from behind a 3.6L is not right for a Hemi.
AW4 or 42RE — 1993
An automatic 1993 4.0L can have either the Aisin AW4 or Chrysler’s 42RE. They are unrelated designs, so on a 1993 we confirm which one you have from the VIN or a photo of the unit.
RH or RE — 1993–1998 V8
The 5.2L had the 46RH, with hydraulically controlled overdrive and lockup, through 1995, and the electronically controlled 44RE from 1996. The 1998 5.9L has the heavier-duty 46RE. None of the three is a direct swap for another.
Which eight-speed
The 845RE, 850RE, 8HP70 and 8HP95 are all eight-speeds from the same ZF family, sized for different engines. They are not interchangeable.
Two 2022 Grand Cherokees
The old WK2 body was sold alongside the new WL for 2022. The VIN tells us which you have.
Programming after fitting
The eight-speeds are run by a control module that must be set up for your Jeep, so plan for programming once the replacement is in.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Grand Cherokee transmission problems
Governor pressure faults — 1996–2004 42RE, 44RE and 46RE
From 1996 these units set their shift points through a governor pressure solenoid and a pressure sensor. When either one fails, the Jeep holds a low gear, shifts late and hard, or will not upshift, so have both checked before condemning the transmission.
Solenoid pack — 45RFE and 545RFE
A failing solenoid pack puts the transmission into limp mode or leaves it with erratic shifts or no drive.
W5A580 conductor plate — 2005–2013
The conductor plate inside the transmission fails and forces limp mode, leaving the Jeep stuck in one gear, and the sleeve at the electrical connector can leak fluid.
Eight-speed shift quality — 2014 on
Harsh or inconsistent shifts, delayed engagement and bumps when slowing down. Many of these complaints are cured by a control-module software update rather than a new transmission.

FAQ
Grand Cherokee transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Grand Cherokee have?
It depends on the engine and year. A 1993–1998 model has the AX-15 manual (1993–1994), the AW4 or 42RE behind the 4.0L, or the 46RH, 44RE or 46RE behind the V8s. From 1999 to 2013 the six and most V8s had Chrysler four-, five- and six-speeds, while the V6s, the SRT8s and the 2007–2008 diesel had the Mercedes five-speed, and every Grand Cherokee from 2014 has an eight-speed from the ZF family in one of several sizes. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
My 2014–2015 Grand Cherokee rolled away after I put it in Park. Is the transmission faulty?
Usually not. These years were recalled because the electronic shift lever made it easy to leave the Jeep out of Park, and the recall software adds an automatic Park feature. Have it done before suspecting the transmission.
Will a Durango transmission fit?
The Durango shares several of these units, but the version still has to match your engine and model year. Send us your VIN.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
