Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Wrangler have?

Since 1987 the Wrangler has gone from three-speed to eight-speed automatics, and from Peugeot and Aisin five-speeds to six-speed manuals, with each unit tied to a particular engine and span of years. The YJ alone changed its six-cylinder manual from a Peugeot to an Aisin partway through 1989, and its four-cylinder had no automatic option until 1994.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Jeep skipped the 1996 model year between the YJ and the TJ, so no 1996 Wrangler appears. In every generation the engine and the model year decide which unit fits, and the VIN confirms it.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Peugeot or Aisin — 1989 YJ

Manual six-cylinder YJs moved from the Peugeot BA-10/5 to the Aisin AX-15 during the 1989 model year, so a 1989 can have either. We go by the build date on the door-jamb label, or by a photo of the gearbox.

Match the engine and the year

On a TJ the 4.0L alone used three different manuals depending on the year, and the automatic changed for 2003. The VIN settles it.

Two 2018 Wranglers

A 2018 JK has the NSG370 or the W5A580; a 2018 JL has the new six-speed or the 850RE. Nothing interchanges between them.

4xe is different

The 4xe’s eight-speed carries an electric motor where the torque converter would be, so it does not swap with the 850RE from other JLs. Tell us if your Jeep is a 4xe.

Manual JL clutch recall

Jeep recalled manual-transmission JLs because the clutch pressure plate could overheat and fracture. If you are replacing a manual gearbox, check by VIN that the recall work has been done.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Wrangler transmission problems

Peugeot BA-10/5 shifting — 1987–1989 YJ

The Peugeot gearbox behind the early 4.2L is known for a stiff, notchy shift even when fresh, and worn units grind going into gear.

42RLE limp mode — 2003–2011

A failing solenoid pack drops the 42RLE into limp mode, where it holds a single gear until the fault is fixed.

850RE harsh shifts — 2018-on JL

The eight-speed in the JL can shift harshly or clunk, most often on downshifts as the Jeep slows. Dealers usually start with a software update to the transmission control module.

FAQ

Wrangler transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Wrangler have?

It depends on the generation, engine and year — eight different units on the TJ alone. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.

Can I put an automatic in a manual Wrangler?

It is a conversion, not a replacement — pedals, wiring, driveshafts and electronics all change. We supply like-for-like units.

Will a Gladiator transmission fit a JL?

The Gladiator uses the same six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic families as the JL, but a unit still has to match your engine and drivetrain. We confirm that by VIN rather than assuming a swap will work.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.

Ready to replace your Wrangler transmission?

Tell us the year and have your VIN to hand — a specialist will confirm the right unit and send you a quote.
