Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Liberty have?
The Liberty’s automatic changed partway through its first generation. The 45RFE four-speed behind the 3.7L gave way during 2003 to the 42RLE, a rear-drive version of Chrysler’s Ultradrive four-speed, which then served every automatic Liberty through 2012. The 2005–2006 diesel had its own 545RFE five-speed, and the manuals were the NV1500 and NV3550 five-speeds and, from 2005, the NSG370 six-speed.
The table below shows what was fitted when. Because a 2003 can have either four-speed automatic, we confirm from your VIN.
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 45RFE four-speed automatic | 3.7L, 2002 to early 2003. 15-bolt pan and an angled crossmember. |
| 42RLE four-speed automatic | 3.7L, from partway through 2003. 13-bolt pan and a straight crossmember; no dipstick. |
| 545RFE five-speed automatic | 2.8L CRD, 2005–2006. |
| NV1500 five-speed manual | 2.4L, early years. |
| NV3550 five-speed manual | 3.7L, 2002–2004. |
| NSG370 six-speed manual | From 2005 behind the 3.7L, and the 2.4L in its final year. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 42RLE four-speed automatic | 3.7L, all years; the only transmission from 2009. |
| NSG370 six-speed manual | 2008 Sport only; dropped for 2009. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
45RFE or 42RLE
Both are four-speed automatics behind the 3.7L, and the changeover came partway through the 2003 model year. Count the pan bolts: 15 on the 45RFE, 13 on the 42RLE. The 45RFE also sits on an angled crossmember, the 42RLE on a straight one.
The diesel’s five-speed
The 2.8L CRD was only sold with the 545RFE. It is not the 42RLE from a 3.7L, and no 3.7L Liberty had it.
Which manual
Three manuals over the years: the NV1500 behind the 2.4L, the NV3550 behind the 3.7L to 2004, and the NSG370 six-speed from 2005, which on the KK was only fitted to the 2008 Sport.
Checking the 42RLE after fitting
The 42RLE has no dipstick; the fluid level is set on a lift. The Ultradrive family is also known to be sensitive to the wrong fluid, so fill with the specified type.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Liberty transmission problems
42RLE limp mode — 2003–2012
What owners report most is the solenoid and pressure-switch pack: harsh 2–3 shifts, then limp mode locked in second gear, usually with codes P0755, P0846 or P1776. We found no Chrysler bulletin on it, but the Ultradrive family is documented for limp-home lock-ups and for suffering when the wrong fluid is used.
42RLE park-pawl recall — 2006
Recall 05V-460, announced in October 2005, covered a mis-installed cup plug on the park-pawl anchor shaft that could stop the vehicle reaching Park and let it roll away. It took in 256,409 Chrysler vehicles including the 2006 Liberty, and the fix is a bracket, not a transmission.
Clutch interlock recall — manual models
Recall 15V-222 (2015) covered the clutch ignition interlock spring on manual Liberty models. If yours is a manual, check whether it has been done before suspecting the clutch or the transmission.

FAQ
Liberty transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Liberty have?
A 3.7L automatic has the 45RFE to early 2003 and the 42RLE after that; the 2.8L CRD has the 545RFE; the manuals are the NV1500, NV3550 or NSG370 depending on engine and year. Every 2009–2012 Liberty is a 42RLE automatic. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
I have a 2003 Liberty. Is it the 45RFE or the 42RLE?
Either. The changeover came partway through the 2003 model year. Count the pan bolts — 15 means 45RFE, 13 means 42RLE — or send us the VIN and we will check.
My Liberty won’t stay in Park. Is the transmission failing?
On a 2006 it may be the park-pawl recall 05V-460, which is fixed with a bracket at no charge. Have the dealer check the VIN for open recalls before you buy a transmission.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
