Engine Options
Which engine does your Liberty have?
The Liberty had two generations and three engines. The 2002–2007 KJ was sold with the 2.4L PowerTech four, the 3.7L PowerTech V6 and, for 2005–2006 only, a 2.8L CRD turbodiesel built by VM Motori. The 2008–2012 KK kept the 3.7L V6 and nothing else.
The table below lists what was offered when. The 3.7L is the same EKG engine throughout, but the KK changed its ignition system, so we confirm the model year from your VIN before we quote.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L PowerTech DOHC four-cylinder | Code: EDZ | Standard on the Sport with the manual, 2002 until around 2005–2006. |
| 3.7L PowerTech V6 | Code: EKG | All years and trims; coil-on-plug ignition with one coil per cylinder. |
| 2.8L CRD turbodiesel four-cylinder | VM Motori R428. Sport and Limited, 2005–2006 only, automatic only. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.7L PowerTech V6 | Code: EKG | The only engine; wasted-spark coil-on-plug ignition. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
KJ or KK
The 2002–2007 KJ and the 2008–2012 KK share the 3.7L EKG, but the KK runs a wasted-spark ignition where the KJ has one coil per cylinder. We match the engine to the model year rather than treating every 3.7L as the same.
Two different four-cylinders
The 2.4L is a twin-cam four from the early KJ; the 2.8L CRD is a turbodiesel sold for 2005–2006 only. They share nothing, and the CRD was only ever paired with the 545RFE automatic.
The 2.4L’s last year
Sources differ on whether the 2.4L ended with the 2005 or the 2006 model year. If you have a late Sport with the manual, the VIN settles which engine it has.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Liberty engine problems
Dropped valve seat — 3.7L, 2002 on
Owners widely report a pressed-in valve seat working loose, usually after the engine has overheated. The valve is held open and can strike the piston, which normally means a replacement engine. The 2002 model year is reported most often. We found no recall or bulletin, so this is an owner-reported fault rather than one Chrysler acknowledged.
Fire-risk recalls — 2002–2007
Recall 06V-036 (February 2006) covered an engine wiring harness fault with a fire risk, and recall 13V-252 (June 2013) covered the fuel tank in a rear impact, fixed by fitting a trailer hitch. Neither is an engine fault, but have any open one done.
No engine recall — 2008–2012
We found no powertrain recall on the KK. Its recalls were for the brakes in 2010 and a steering-column rivet in 2011, so a 2008–2012 Liberty that runs badly is not waiting on a free engine fix.

FAQ
Liberty engine questions, answered
Which engine does my Liberty have?
Almost certainly the 3.7L V6: every Liberty was offered with it, and it is the only engine on the 2008–2012 KK. Early Sports with a manual have the 2.4L four, and a 2005–2006 automatic may have the 2.8L CRD diesel. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Will a 3.7L from a 2008–2012 Liberty fit my 2002–2007?
It is the same EKG engine, but the KK uses a wasted-spark ignition and the KJ one coil per cylinder, so we match the model year rather than treating the two as interchangeable. Tell us the year and we will quote the matching version.
Did the Liberty come with a diesel?
Yes, briefly. The 2.8L CRD was sold for 2005–2006 on the Sport and Limited, automatic only, and was not offered in California, New York, Massachusetts, Maine or Vermont. It was dropped for 2007 when emissions rules changed.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
