Transmission Options

Which transmission does your X5 have?

Only the E53 3.0i offered a manual; every other X5 has been an automatic, and the unit has followed the engine: a GM five-speed behind the E53 six, ZF five- and six-speeds behind the V8s, the E70 six and the diesel, and ZF eight-speeds of several sizes since 2011.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Because one model year can carry three or four different units, and BMW’s own labels differ from ZF’s, we confirm from your VIN.

2000–2006E53

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

In most years the X5 carried three or four transmissions at once, one per engine. A unit from behind the N55 six is not right for the N63 V8, and the diesel has its own.

BMW’s labels and ZF’s

BMW calls the 5L40-E the A5S 360R or A5S 390R, the 5HP24 the A5S 440Z and the 6HP26 the GA6HP26Z. A unit listed under either name can be the same thing, so we match by VIN rather than by the name on a listing.

Hybrid and M versions

The xDrive40e’s eight-speed carries an electric motor, the 2024-on 48-volt cars do the same, and the E70 and F85 X5 M have M-specification automatics. None of these interchanges with the standard unit behind the same engine.

Programming after fitting

The 6HP and 8HP are electronically controlled, with the mechatronic control unit inside the transmission. A replacement needs programming to the vehicle.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common X5 transmission problems

Mechatronic sleeve leak — ZF 6HP, 2004–2013

Fluid seeps past the O-ring on the mechatronic sealing sleeve, where the wiring passes through the case. A BMW bulletin covers 6HP19, 6HP21, 6HP26 and 6HP28 units built to April 2008, including the E53, and replaces the sleeve only when the fluid loss is substantial; owners report the same leak on the E70 diesels.

Parking-lock and shift-to-neutral recalls — E70 and F15

Recall 12V019 covers E70 X5s whose parking lock may not engage, and recall 16V919 covers F15 X5s where a faulty ECU ground cable can make the transmission shift to neutral unexpectedly. Have any open recall done before suspecting the transmission.

Front driveshaft recall — E70

Recall 17V138 covers the E70’s front driveshaft universal joint. Driveline noise on an xDrive X5 is not always the automatic, so have the recall checked first.

FAQ

X5 transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my X5 have?

It depends on the engine and year: the GM 5L40-E behind the E53 six and the ZF 5HP24 behind its V8s to 2003, ZF six-speeds behind the N62 V8s, the E70 six and the diesel from 2004 to 2013, and ZF eight-speeds in several sizes from 2011. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My 2004–2013 X5 is leaking transmission fluid. Does it need a new transmission?

Usually not. Seepage at the mechatronic sealing sleeve is a known 6HP fault that BMW fixes by replacing the sleeve, and its bulletin covers the E53 and other units built to April 2008. A transmission that has been run low on fluid is a different matter, and we can quote for one.

Did the X5 come with a manual?

Only the E53 3.0i, with a five-speed early in the run and a six-speed later. Every X5 since 2007 has been an automatic.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
