Engine Options

Which engine does your X5 have?

Four generations of X5 have used a dozen BMW engine families: the M54 six and the M62 and N62 V8s in the E53; the N52 six, the N62, the M57 diesel and, from 2011, the turbocharged N55 and N63 in the E70; the N55, the updated N63, the N57 diesel and the N20 plug-in hybrid in the F15; and the B58 six, the later N63s and the 48-volt S68 in the G05, with the S63 in the X5 M through 2023.

The table below lists what was offered when. BMW’s engine code is cast into the block and recorded against the VIN in BMW’s build data, but it is not in the VIN itself, so we confirm every X5 from the VIN before we quote.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Same size, different engine

The M62 (to 2003), N62 (2004–2010) and N63 (2011 on) are all 4.4L V8s and share nothing, and the N63 was updated several times after that. Likewise the M54, N52, N55 and B58 are four different 3.0L sixes, and the diesel changed from M57 to N57 for 2014 while the badge stayed xDrive35d.

Mid-generation changes

The E53 swapped its M62 V8s for the N62 in 2004, and the E70 replaced the N52 and N62 with the turbocharged N55 and N63 for 2011. A 2003 and a 2004 4.4i, or a 2010 and a 2011 X5, have different engines.

Hybrid versions

The xDrive40e’s N20 and the xDrive45e and xDrive50e’s B58 are built for a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a high-voltage battery, and the 2024-on 40i has a 48-volt mild-hybrid B58 that differs from the 2019–2023 engine. Tell us which your X5 is.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common X5 engine problems

Valve-stem seals and coolant pipe — N62, 2004–2010

Hardened valve-stem seals let oil into the cylinders, so the engine smokes blue at start-up and idle and oil use climbs; the repair is a major one. The coolant transfer pipe seals, alternator-bracket gasket and timing-chain guides also fail with age.

Oil consumption, chains and turbos — N63, 2011–2018

The first N63 (2011–2013) uses oil heavily and suffers turbo failures, valve-stem seals and stretched timing chains. BMW’s Customer Care Package of 2014–2015 and the Bang settlement gave 2009–2014 N63 cars oil-consumption tests and engine repair or replacement, and bulletin 111614 sets out the chain inspection for 2010–2013 X5s. The updated N63TU in the 2014–2018 xDrive50i still used oil and is covered by the Isley settlement, with benefits from February 2022.

Oil-filter-housing gasket — N55, 2011–2018

The gasket leaks oil onto the serpentine belt; the belt shreds and can be pulled through the front crank seal into the sump, blocking the oil pick-up and wrecking the rod bearings. Charge-pipe, high-pressure fuel pump and electric water pump failures are the N55’s other usual faults.

Fire-risk recalls — N52 2007–2010 and N57 2014–2018

The N52’s PCV blow-by heater can short-circuit and start a fire; recalls 17V683, 19V273 and 22V119 cover the E70 sixes, and BMW advised parking outdoors until the work was done. On the N57 diesel the EGR cooler leaks coolant internally, builds soot and can melt the intake; recalls 18V755 and 21V907 replace the cooler, and BMW’s 2025 extended warranty covers N57T EGR coolers for 25 years with no mileage limit.

FAQ

X5 engine questions, answered

Which engine does my X5 have?

It depends on the year and the badge — the table above lists them. The code is cast into the block, and because the VIN itself does not encode the engine, we confirm it from BMW’s build record for your VIN.

My 2011–2018 xDrive50i uses a lot of oil. Does it need a new engine?

Not necessarily. Oil consumption is the N63’s known fault, and BMW’s Customer Care Package, the Bang settlement (2009–2014 cars) and the Isley settlement (the later N63TU) provided consumption tests, oil top-ups and engine repair or replacement. Check what was done under those programs before paying for an engine; a replacement makes sense once the chains, turbos or stem seals have failed.

What goes wrong with the E53 engines?

The M54 six’s known faults are the cooling system (expansion tank and water pump), the DISA intake valve and the oil-filter-housing gasket. The 2000–2003 M62 V8s suffer VANOS and timing-chain-guide failures, and the 2004–2006 N62s have the valve-stem-seal and coolant-pipe faults described above.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
