Mitsubishi Engines
Finding the right Mitsubishi engine
Mitsubishi’s US engines come from a handful of families: the 4G63 and 4G64 fours of the 1990s and 2000s, the 4B11 and 4B12 that replaced them from 2008, the belt-driven 6G7 V6s in the Montero, Montero-Sport, Galant, Eclipse and Endeavor, the chain-driven 6B31 V6 in the Outlander, the three-cylinder 3A92 in the Mirage and the 1.5L turbo in the Eclipse Cross.
One displacement can hide several different engines. A 2.4L may be a 4G64, a 4G69, a 4B12 or a 4J12, and the SOHC 4J12 and DOHC 4B12 do not interchange; the Lancer Evolution’s turbo 4G63 is not the Eclipse’s. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Mitsubishi vehicles
4G63 and 4G63T 2.0L
The turbo 4G63T in the 1990–1999 Eclipse GS-T and GSX and the 2003–2006 Lancer Evolution VIII and IX, the Evolution engine being a different build from the Eclipse’s. Crankshaft walk on the “7-bolt” Eclipse engines built from mid-1992 is widely reported. The non-turbo 2.0L in the 1995–1999 Eclipse RS and GS is a Chrysler engine, not a 4G63.
4G64 and 4G69 2.4L
The SOHC 4G64 in the 2000–2005 Eclipse RS and GS, 1999–2003 Galant, 2003 Outlander and late-1990s Montero-Sport, and the MIVEC 4G69 in the 2006–2012 Eclipse, 2004–2012 Galant, 2004–2006 Outlander and 2004–2007 Lancer. The 16-valve 4G64 is an interference engine; the 8-valve is not.
4B11 and 4B12
The 2.0L 4B11 in the 2008–2017 Lancer and 2011–2024 Outlander Sport, the turbo 4B11T in the 2008–2015 Lancer Evolution X and, with a smaller turbo, the Lancer Ralliart, and the 2.4L 4B12 in the Lancer, 2008–2015 Outlander and 2015–2024 Outlander Sport. From 2016 to 2020 the four-cylinder Outlander used the SOHC 4J12 instead, which does not interchange with the 4B12. Recalls 14V562 and 18V069 replaced accessory-drive pulleys, tensioners and belts on 2008–2017 Lancers and Outlanders; a thrown belt stops the charging and cooling but is not an engine failure.
6G7 V6s
Belt-driven V6s: the 3.0L 6G72 in the 1997–2004 Montero-Sport, 2000–2005 Eclipse GT and 1999–2003 Galant; the 3.5L 6G74 in the 2001–2002 Montero and 1999–2004 Montero-Sport; and the 3.8L 6G75 in the 2003–2006 Montero, 2004–2011 Endeavor, 2004–2012 Galant and 2006–2012 Eclipse GT. SOHC, DOHC and MIVEC versions are not interchangeable. Oil consumption through the valve-stem seals on the 6G72 is widely reported.
6B31 3.0L V6
The chain-driven SOHC MIVEC V6 in the Outlander from 2007 to 2020, paired with a Jatco six-speed automatic rather than the four-cylinder’s CVT.
3A92 three-cylinder and 4B40 turbo
The 1.2L 3A92 in the Mirage hatchback from 2014 (there was no 2016 model) and the Mirage G4 sedan from 2017, and the 1.5L 4B40 turbo in the 2018–2024 Eclipse Cross. The 2022-on Outlander uses a Nissan 2.5L instead.

FAQ
Used Mitsubishi engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Mitsubishi has?
The vehicle information code plate under the hood lists the model, the engine code — 4B11, 6G75 and so on — and the transmission code, and the engine code is also on the emissions label. Online VIN decoders only partly cover Mitsubishi, so send us the full 17-character VIN and we will confirm the exact version.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
My Outlander stalls or loses power — does it need an engine?
Not necessarily. On 2015–2016 Outlanders and Outlander Sports, recall 17V609 replaced a starter relay that can stall the engine or cut its power, and it is often mistaken for an engine fault. On 2008–2017 Lancers and Outlanders, recalls 14V562 and 18V069 covered accessory belts and pulleys. Have those checked first; if the engine itself has failed, send us your VIN.
Does a used Mitsubishi engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
