Engine Options
Which engine does your Civic have?
Since 1980 the Civic has gone from carbureted 1.3L and 1.5L fours to fuel injection from 1988, with 1.5L, 1.6L and 1.7L D-series fours through 2005, then the 1.8L R-series for ten years, and from 2016 a 2.0L or a 1.5L turbo. The Type R and the hybrids have always had engines of their own, and every Si since 1999 has had its own engine or a higher-output version of a regular one.
Even the same size can hide different engines. The 1996–2000 Civic alone was built with five 1.6L engines, the 2.0L fitted from 2025 is not the 2.0L of 2016–2024, and the Si’s 1.5L turbo is a higher-output version of the one in an EX. Each generation’s engines are listed below by trim, and your VIN tells us which one your car left the factory with.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Find your engine code
Civic engine codes such as D16Y7, R18A1 and K20C2 are stamped on the block. If yours is hard to reach or read, your VIN tells us which engine the car was built with.
Si, Type R and hybrid engines are different
None of them interchanges with the regular engine of the same year, and the Si’s 1.5L turbo is set up differently from the one in an EX or Touring. The exception is the Si of the 1988–1991 and 1992–1995 generations, which used the same D16A6 or D16Z6 as other trims.
1995 or 1996: OBD-I or OBD-II
Civics from 1996 on use OBD-II engine management, while 1992–1995 cars use OBD-I. The sensors, wiring and engine computer differ between the two, so the replacement should come from your side of that change.
Watch the 2025 changeover
The 2.0L and the hybrid in 2025-on Civics are new engines. Do not assume a 2016–2024 2.0L fits a 2025 car, or the other way round.
Have your VIN ready
Most Civic model years were built with several engines, depending on trim and body style. Your VIN settles which one your car has, so we ask for it before we quote.
Common Problems
Common Civic engine problems
Burnt exhaust valves — 1980–2000 engines
These engines need their valve clearances set by hand at Honda’s service intervals. When that is neglected, the exhaust valves stop sealing and burn, which shows up as a misfire, a rough idle and low compression on one or more cylinders.
Cracked engine block — 2006–2008 1.8L
The block on these engines can crack and seep coolant, which leads to overheating and, left alone, a failed engine. Honda replaced blocks and engines under an extended warranty that has since ended, so check whether your car already had one.
Oil dilution — 2016–2018 1.5L turbo
Fuel washes past the piston rings into the oil, worst on short trips in cold weather, so the oil level rises and the dipstick smells of gasoline. Honda’s remedy was a software update and an oil change.

FAQ
Civic engine questions, answered
Will a Civic engine from a different year fit my car?
Only when the engine codes match. Most generations used engines of their own, as did the Type R, the hybrids and most Si models, and the 2025-on 2.0L is a different engine from the earlier one. Give us your VIN and we will tell you which years and trims share your engine.
Does my Civic’s engine have a timing belt?
If it is a 1980–2000 car, or a 2001–2005 car with the 1.7L, yes. The 2002–2005 Si’s 2.0L and the non-hybrid engines from 2006 on use a timing chain instead. Fit a new belt with a replacement engine, and on the D-series replace the water pump at the same time, since the belt drives it.
Can I use the 1.8L from another Honda?
The 1.8L R-series was also used in the 2016–2022 HR-V, but in its own version. Match the engine code, and send us your VIN so we can confirm what interchanges.
Does the Civic still come with a turbo?
Yes, in the Si and the Type R. From 2025 the 1.5L turbo is only in the Si, the Type R has its own 2.0L turbo, and every other Civic has the non-turbo 2.0L or the hybrid.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
