Engine Options

Which engine does your Accord have?

The Accord has changed engines with almost every generation: 1.8L four-cylinders from 1980 to 1985, a 2.0L from 1986, the 2.2L and 2.3L of the 1990s, the 2.4L from 2003, V6s from 1995 to 2017, and turbocharged four-cylinders and a 2.0L hybrid since 2018. Most engine codes belong to a single generation, and the few that carried over, such as the 1.5L turbo, still have to match by code.

Within a generation there are still differences that matter. Carbureted and fuel-injected engines were sold side by side from 1985 to 1989, VTEC and non-VTEC engines from 1994 to 2002, V6 cars came with and without cylinder deactivation, and hybrids use engines of their own. The table below lists what was offered; the code is stamped on the engine, and we can confirm it from your VIN.

1980–1981First generation
1.8L CVCC four-cylinder (1,751 cc)Code: EK1Carbureted. The only engine offered in US Accords of these years.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Find your engine code

Honda stamps the engine code — K24A4, J35Z2 and so on — on the engine block. If it is hard to read, your VIN tells us the same thing.

Carbureted or fuel-injected — 1985–1989

The 1985 SE-i, the 1986–1989 LX-i and the 1989 SE-i have fuel-injected engines (ES3 and A20A3); every other Accord of those years is carbureted (ES2 and A20A1). The replacement needs the same fuel system as the engine that came out.

V6: with or without cylinder deactivation

From 2008 to 2017, automatic V6 cars have Variable Cylinder Management, which shuts off cylinders when cruising. Six-speed manual coupes use a V6 without it. They are different engines.

Four-cylinder versions

Several generations offered two versions of the same four-cylinder — the non-VTEC F22B2 and the VTEC F22B1 in 1994–1997, or the K24Z2 and the higher-output K24Z3 in 2008–2012. Two engines of the same size are not necessarily the same engine, so go by the code.

Hybrid or gasoline

Accord Hybrids (2005–2007, 2014–2015 and 2017 on) and the 2014 Plug-In Hybrid use engines of their own, which do not interchange with the gasoline ones.

Have your VIN ready

Your VIN pins down the model year, trim and engine code, so the quote is for the right version from the start.

Common Problems

Common Accord engine problems

Timing-belt failure — 1990–2002 four-cylinder

The 2.2L and 2.3L four-cylinders are interference engines: if the timing belt breaks or jumps a tooth, the valves strike the pistons. They also run a separate balance-shaft belt, and both belts have to be renewed on schedule.

Oil consumption and misfires — 2008–2012 V6

On V6 engines with cylinder deactivation, oil gets past the piston rings on the cylinders that shut off, fouling spark plugs and causing misfires. Honda extended the warranty on affected engines, and that cover has now expired.

Oil consumption — 2008–2011 2.4L

Carbon builds up until the piston rings stick, and the engine starts burning oil between changes. Left unchecked, the level can drop far enough to damage the engine.

Cold-start rattle — 2008–2012 2.4L

A loud rattle for a couple of seconds at a cold start, from the variable valve timing actuator. Honda issued a service bulletin on it, and the repair is a new actuator rather than a new engine.

Head gasket leaks — 1.5L turbo and hybrid, 2018–2026

Coolant leaking past the cylinder-head gasket leads to overheating and misfires. In August 2026 Honda extended the warranty on the head gasket to 10 years or 150,000 miles for 2018–2026 1.5L turbo and hybrid Accords, so ask a Honda dealer whether the repair is covered before paying for an engine.

FAQ

Accord engine questions, answered

Will an Accord engine from a different generation fit my car?

Usually not. Most engine codes were used in one generation only. A few carried over, such as the 1.8L EK1 (1980–1983) and the 1.5L turbo L15BE (2018 on), but even then go by the code rather than the year. Send us your VIN and we will confirm exactly which engine your car needs.

Does my Accord’s engine have a timing belt?

It depends on the engine. Every four-cylinder through 2002 and every V6 uses a timing belt, while the four-cylinder engines from 2003 on use a timing chain. If yours has a belt, have a new one fitted when the replacement engine goes in.

Can I use a 2.4L from a CR-V or Element?

Sometimes. The 2003–2006 Element has the same K24A4 as the 2003–2005 Accord, and the 2007–2011 Element the same K24A8 as the 2006–2007 Accord. The CR-V used different versions. Match the engine code, and send us your VIN so we can confirm.

My Accord stalls. Do I need a new engine?

Not necessarily. Honda has recalled certain 2013–2023 Accords because the fuel pump inside the tank can fail and stall the engine while driving. A Honda dealer can tell from your VIN whether yours is included and replaces the pump free, so ask before you buy an engine.

Does the Accord still come with a V6?

No. The Accord had a V6 from 1995 to 2017: a 2.7L through 1997, then 3.0L and 3.5L J-series engines. Since 2018 it has used turbocharged four-cylinders or a 2.0L hybrid.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
